I've been playing with Southampton the past 2 days and it's a lot of fun. However, one thing keeps bothering me. A couple of freighttrains are supossed to go on the Totton loop and the to some refinery. Where is this refinery? I can't find it on the layout... Log in to reply |

Ok, so I should send them to Marchwood?

Hello, Yep, send them down the single line towards Marchwood. I'm not sure on the correct procedure but at first I had difficulty in getting the signals to clear. I found that setting the route from signal 791 to the shunt signal 999, onwards to signal MW3, followed by the grey triangle at the end works and is probably the best way to get them through without any delay. Hope that helps, James Log in to reply |

789 to MW3 will clear fine if you dont want to use the shunt signal.....

Yes - towards Marchwood is OK. The line to the refinery branches off from the Marchwood line somewhere outside your control.

I just tried this out. There are two ways in which one can set a route to Fawley Refinery (not marked on the panel, but off Marchwood). The direct and probably intuitive one is from 787 (the starter signal at Totton station) to 791, then MW3 (all main signals) and finally the Marchwood exit. However, the sim doesn't permit a route to be set from 791 to MW3. It has to be set 791-999-MW3, which seems to break the rule about routes from main signal to main signal not being set through intermediate shunt signals. Alternatively, as ledgero2 posted, one can set a route from 787 to 789 and then MW3, all main signals, bypassing 999. Here it is without setting the final leg from MW3 to Marchwood: It might not seem the obvious thing to do to set a route through Totton Yard. However, taking a second look at a timetable such as 6O58's, it mentions TOTTON LOOP as the final waypoint before FAWLEY REFINERY. Although TOTTON LOOP is not marked directly on the panel, it is now clear that there is a loop here, so this was probably the TT creator's intention. When this sim is updated (a Simplifier would be appreciated too!), would it be unreasonable to add a route from 791 to MW3? Also to indicate FAWLEY REFINERY and maybe TOTTON LOOP on the actual panel? Depends if the panel would have Fawley marked on I guess? I know some panels don't have markers on as for local knowledge, you'd know where Fawley is as it goes straight on from the junction where the MOD line branches off. I would suspect that the points are G.F or manual point operated down there?

" said: When this sim is updated(if) " said: would it be unreasonable to add a route from 791 to MW3?If, in real life, it was possible to set a route between these two signals, then this would have been simulated. I assume this route is not allowed because it is not possible in reality. Last edited: 16/02/2012 at 01:07 by peterb Log in to reply |

I miss the absence of keyboard shortcuts; in particular, "1", then "hold down right arrow", doesn't work. (But it's a small enough sim that "hold down left arrow", "hold down right arrow" does okay, and quiet enough that "f" and "n" are welcome.) When playing a new sim, a quick run through Google Maps to try to say "okay, where am I?" often seems to be helpful, and that would find you the Fawley refinery. Also (if you're up to exploring in Street View) some very pretty semaphores at the Marchwood Main Road LC. Does the real panel show the loop at Marchwood? Ok, just to keep everybody informed, SimSig Southampton is *very* old. To have the sim re-released, would include having to be heavily re-worked, thus consuming lots of development time, that could be spent doing lots of other work. Although, don't fret, you never know your luck! Log in to reply |

From the Wiki: Quote: Also note that, for trains in passenger service, routes should normally only be set between main signals, not to shunt signals. Anyway, you can't route the usual passenger trains through there - there's a blue border around Totton yard marked 3RD RAIL LIMIT! Last edited: 16/02/2012 at 05:10 by maxand Log in to reply |

" said:Also to indicate FAWLEY REFINERY and maybe TOTTON LOOP on the actual panel?as previously stated, it probsably isnt indicated on the actual panel, but it is a fair issue for people playing who dont know the area. i would suggest you place it in the wiki page for southampton for people to look it up. i spose the real issue would be a real timetable would have marchwood as a timetabled location so maybe theres also an issue there. if you hate exit points that dont clearly display every location they lead to on the panel, dont try south humberside :P " said: apart from the loco hauled charters that might go down there, oh and the DEMUS and DMUs that run through the area frequently! One further thought - and I have to say I don't know the area - is that, conceivably, what's now the (seemingly) bidirectional lines around Totton Loop were unidirectional in semaphore days & thus that down trains always went through what's now shown as the loop.

This photo (linked from this discussion - a long time ago!) suggests that 791 (assume this what you mean) can clear to a main proceed aspect, but doesn't necessarily prove that it can do so towards Marchwood. I'd have thought it unlikely that the only main route from 791 would be back out onto the Down Main though - there are definitely signalled (main) routes from the Down Main into both lines here.
