i tend to think when huge sums are fined from companies like NR for breaches of practice, once a suitable amount has been paid to victims, and costs have been covered, the rest should be invested into the prevention of future accidents, rather than depriving a company of money, making it more likely to cut costs. when XC was fined for not installing Wifi on all 221/220 units, its reasoning was a lack of funds, so why did the ORR take more money away from it? surely they shouldve just taken the money and had compulsory installation carried out with it? The fines are imposed to try and fool the public into the fact that something is being done. The cost of the fines ends up being imposed on the customer, in this case fare paying passengers. The directors who are truly responsible by imposing draconian cost-cutting get off scot-free and also probably get a generous bonus. Welcome to the real world, which is even more crazy than Wonderland!

When it comes to elf and safety if there is a case to answer you don't have any option but to admit guilt! Agree with previous comments. Who pays? We do of course! They admit guilt and get fined. This will already be built into the financial forecast for the company and passed down the food chain. Then ultimately the punters are at the bottom of the food chain. Once we get to this stage, the fact that a life was lost has become an irrelevance. As sad as it was this isn't about human life any more. This is about folding stuff and who pays who!
