Hello all, A bit of a long shot but you never know who might remember it! Just putting a consist together in a train sim of the 6E30 Eastleigh to Haverton Hill in '91. I can't quite figure out the consist it may have had and the only photo I can see is: http://www.hondawanderer.com/47365_Tackley_1991.htm I can see: 47/3 3 X TTA's (white I think) 4 X flats or low sides 1 X RfD VDA 4 wheel van?? Can't see what else it might have carried though! If anyone happens to know and could tell me please, it would be appreciated :) James. Log in to reply |

I suggest that behind the VDA barrier van (presuming it is a VDA) are chemical tanks and another barrier vehicle behind those. That would also make sense with the train going to Haverton Hill.

Cheers for the replies Dan (?) and Paul! I could get away with all sorts really then! I don't have ICI tanks on the sim but there is white tanks like the one in the last picture, and steel slabs. Didn't find those pictures Paul, mainly as I tried Google which, of course, shows all sorts junk! Trying to find what freight was around between 1990 - 1995 is a mission for Google, found some photos through class47.co.uk though! Thanks again! Log in to reply |

Indeed James, since the demise of all those fotopic websites, alot of decent photo's have been lost. Frustrating for myself when it comes to Parcels and TPO workings from the 1980s/1990s.

The white tanks may well have been methanol tanks (believe there was a flow Haverton-Eastleigh for this stuff (used to get unloaded (funnily enough) in what are now known as the methanol siding(s) -usually the haunt of OTM's these days - at the back of Eastleigh East yd, near where the NR offices are for those that know the area ). The flats look like some kind of MOD flat, the van could be a VEA ( 11t airbraked vanfit??), tying in with the MOD flats (can't remember when Bedenham on the old Gosport branch closed, IIRC that used to see plenty of those either there or other MOD places being a bit tight on the curve department...) The VDA van would be a barrier wagon & also possibly the freightliner flat if that is on the other side of the tanks. The tanks conveyed 'Hazardous Goods' & therefore barrier wagons either side of the tanks was a necessary feature. Speedlink traffic throughout the 1980s conveyed a mixture of bogie & 2 axle wagons. The easiest way to create a wagon load Speedlink consist & what I intend to do in timetables is as follows:- 'Cl.47+assorted 2 axle & bogie wagons'. The train length is then set to the maximum length limit of the train which is usually 60SLUs = 384m(incl. loco) or 448m=70SLUs. Hpwever for length limits you really need a freight train loads book. I have about 12 different freight train loads book dating from 1968 through to 1996. So if there is a specific service you need the length limit on then 'PM' the train headcode & description & I will look it up in the freight train loads book. After 21 years on freight side of the railway industry I have a large number of publications which are specific to freight train services. One book I have is called 'BRITISH RAIL EASTERN REGION MARSHALLING OF FREIGHT TRAINS16th MAy, 1988 until further notice. This gives a breakdown of the formation of consists on trains bound for Eastern Region Marshalling Yards. When I worked for the British Railways Board in 1988-1990 one of my jobs was the responsibility of the 'Tagging table' for TOPS(where i had to do all the alterations to it). Tagging was a 3 digit character attached to each wagons when it was released loaded or released empty to TOPS. The 'Tag' denoted the destination the wagons was going to, & as a result trains were marshalled in a specific order from yard to yard. Looking in this book under 'EASTLEIGH' is says the following:- '[b][i]6E30 17.11 SX Eastleigh - Haverton Hill(15020) marshalled from eastleigh (1) 15H Haverton Hill; (2) 152 Tees; (3) 172 Leeds Hunslet; (4) 2352, 252 Tinsley; (5) 657 Bescot'.[i][b] This reflects the order the wagons are put together at Eastleigh East Yard prior to the trains departure northwards.
