Prompted by an edit Howard did to one of my posts over the weekend.

I referred to a posting which showed on my screen as #60 which Howard then edited to #59. Looking at new topics posted since, the first posting is showing as #2. Doing a bit of delving, the first posting shows as:

Firefox 14: #2
IE8: #1
Opera 12: #1
Safari 5: #1
Google Chrome 21: #1

Clearly a problem with Firefox rather than the Forum about which Firefox users should be aware.

Looks Ok on FF13.0.1, must be something new...

One other point, when a post is deleted it is actually only hidden and is still visible to Admins (we can permanently delete). The Admin see a post count which includes these hidden posts, whereas the rest of you see them renumbered.

That is actually the opposite of what you have and is unrelated to the specific case.

Firefox, like all other browsers, will have no idea of post counts. Which post/thread?

This one for a start! My first posting is showing as #2 in FF14 but #1 in Google Chrome. A quick sampling exercise shows that it seems to apply to all topics.

For what its worth, Firefox 14 is still in beta and not available yet as a stable release. It may have bugs in it. The latest stable version is V13.0.1 (which is what my machine is running) and mine shows the first post as post #1.

I'm on FF 13.0.1 and it doesn't show this. I still don't see how it can, since it's the server that outputs the #1, #2 text as part of the link text. What does the first message link in this thread point to (ie the link address)?

Geoff is, of course, correct. The post number is just part of an HTML href tag so Firefox just needs to render it. If you right click on the #1 or whatever and click "inspect Element" it will show you the HTML (if you understand that kind of thing!!) though I am not sure how much help that would be. Perhaps you should go back tot he latest stable release as it seems to be working for everyone else.

Chris

I'm not complaining; all I did was point up a potential fault if people were using Firefox. If the release rather than beta is working correctly then that's the end of it. It might also be worth reporting that IE8 on my system (and after clearing the cache) is now showing the same behaviour.

For what it it worth, in FF14 inspecting the inner element shows "#2"; inspecting the outer element shows "<a href="/index.php?option=com_kunena&amp;view=topic&amp;catid=18&amp;id=33764&amp;Itemid=0#34031" title="" rel="nofollow">#2</a>"

Where the "#2" is coming from, I know not.

Bizarre. 34031 is indeed the first post in this thread.

Found out what circumstances are causing it and it is not browser dependant..

If I am not logged in, the Preferred Message Ordering is the default setting and the first message shows as #1. If I am logged in and the Preferred Message Ordering is "default" or "first post first" then the first message shows as #1. If I am logged in and the Preferred Message Ordering is "last post first", the message at the bottom of the list (i.e. the first message posted) shows as #2.

One for the forum software bugboard, I presume.

Right, that makes sense now and I can recreate it simply by setting my preferences to "last post first". On a multi-page thread, after posting a new message, it jumps to the last page (ie the earlier posts) - another issue. Finally, when I tried to change my profile to select "last post first", it complained of a faulty email address but also said it had saved my settings - but hadn't. Time for a posting on another forum.
