Not sure if this belongs here or under Saltley, but here goes!

While flicking through some LM timetables tonight, I notice the Shirley terminators on the Stratford line now appear to continue to Whitlock's End. Digging about, I see a turnback has been installed there.

Could anyone possibly explain how it's laid out, ideally from the point of view you'd get looking at the area in the Saltley sim?

Also, I assume the long section showing in the sim between Henley in Arden & Whitlocks End (6 stations!!) has now been split up a bit?

All of the boxes on the North Warwick Line (Stratford panel in the sim) have been closed and are controlled from the West Midlands Signalling Centre at Saltley.

If memory serves me correctly, there is a signal in each direction at Wood End to protect the tunnel, so the section is split in half.

No points remain at Shirley or Henley-in-Arden, Bearley West Junction is much simplified and there is an extra crossover at Stratford to allow access straight in to Platforms 2 and 3.

IIRC the 1979/80 WTT for the area shows whitlocks end terminators which turn back for moo street (as it was the terminus then). i can only assume there must have been a box there at that point, which was subsequently closed and plain lined. although i have no major knowledge of the areas history

looking at google maps, there is a freshly installed crossover, so i would imagine a running signal has been installed to allow a turnback without a shunt.

Until 1982 I lived less than a mile from Shirley station and I "did" the line again a month or so before the area was transferred to WMSC in 2010 and from what I remember, just one crossover was installed at Whitlocks End a little way north of the end of the down platform to the up line towards Shirley to allow trains that terminated at W-E to return on the up line to Brum.

Signalling-wise, at the time I was surprised to see an ordinary signal with a left feather facing south alongside the down line (marked T(B?)9472 in JC92's photo) at the north end of the down platform to signal trains over the crossover onto the up line. I would have expected a ground dolly signal here, but I suspect as the crossover is north of Whitlocks End station, a normal signal was needed as a) the crossover is beyond the up starter signal (TB347? in jc92's photo) and b) from memory there is no other stop signal for quite some distance on the up line - the next is Shirley Station Home - or whatever it's called now.

Looking at jc92's photo in the link below, very strangely that left feather has now gone AND to me the signal number looks very odd! I would have expected signal T(B?)9472 to be marked WM9472. Ho hum!

Sadly, the crossover & ground dolly signal just south of Haslucks Green Road overbridge at Shirley station that were used for many years to turn back trains terminating at Shirley have now gone. Not sure if the "engine siding" accessed by a reverse off the down line just north of the down platform at Shirley is still there though. I'd be surprised if it is as it hadn't been used in donkeys years AFAICR!

I can still remember lying in bed on a Saturday evening and hearing the 23.53(ish) E.C.S. train hurtling through at high speed on its way back to Tyseley depot! That was the fastest train I ever heard along that line as every other train was either just leaving or slowing down to stop at Shirley. Oh, and the odd occasion when work was taking place on the track I'd hear a couple of class 20s whistling away to themselves all night long!

There is nothing but plain line left at Shirley.

The reason for the main signal at Whitlocks End rather than a shunt is that the crossover is used for passenger services.

Ah yes! for which of course the now-removed crossover at Shirley wasn't used - that's why it had a dolly signal as it was beyond the termination point of the passenger service.

I knew there had to be a logical explanation!

Incidentally, until the service commenced turning back at Whitlocks End, the Shirley block section ran from Shirley all the way to Henley-in-Arden! That was some block section!
