On the approaches to many of the major stations in SimSig a train routed from main signal to main signal will pass 2 or 3 shunt signals. If one of these shunt signals has failed, the train stops at each one of the shunts up to the point of failure and you have to talk the driver past.

Does this happen in real life, or can the signaller talk the driver past the main signal at red with the instruction to proceed to the next main signal and then obey the aspect on that signal, in effect ignoring the shunt signals at red or not showing? I've had a look at the RSSB on-line Rule Book and can't find anything that is both relevant and definitive.

It is not allowed to talk past more than one signal at a time, so the driver would have to stop at each signal in turn and phone in.

The other option is to signal the train in from shunt to shunt, which would probably only mean talking past one or two of them rather than all. In reality you would have to caution him for that too as he is getting subsidiary aspects into a clear platform, but the system would allow it most of the time.

I think it's ok to authorise a move from one main signal to the next main signal, including any 'running shunts' as part of that authority. Presumably that's what you're asking!

I know of a Signalman who got himself drug and alcohol screened for that - it is not allowed.

Each and every signal displaying a danger aspect must be talked by individually.
