Wondering about going for the day tomorrow at Stafford - I have been told this is much better than Crewe due to the freight bypassing Crewe station. Are there any better places to go along that stretch of WCML? Any advise welcome!

Tamworth or Nuneaton can be good.

Tamworth is very good for freight, with both the upper and lower level receiving quite a lot of traffic.

Whilst not on the WCML, one other place you could consider is Water Orton. It seems that theres always something interesting along that stretch of line out of Birmingham.

nuneaton also has the leicester/birmingham line which has some freight, tamworth high level has some derby - water orton freights passing aswell.

Tamworth might not have everything that passes Stafford- some traffic may take the Wolverhampton line south of Stafford or join the Walsall line at Litchfield. I doubt that there will be any additional traffic on the WCML at Tamworth that you wouldn't see at Stafford, although as has been said you should see quite a bit on the High Level lines to Derby.

Last time i took a couple of people to Stafford for a days spotting was in 2010 & I can say it was very disappointing. There was hardly any freight until after 1600 & from what a couple of chaps told me who were filming that day that the best time for freight activity at Stafford was between 1700 - 2100. Having said that I've heard Nuneaton is far better these days. As I don't go spotting anymore these days I can't say whther thats a fair comment or not & before anyone suggests I was spotting at Stafford in 2010, the answer is no I was just the person driving the car.

I go Stafford every so often when I go I write down what times freight come past, so next time I go I have a rough idea what time they come at.

Number taking has never been my bag, but there is (was?) quite a nice pub at the north end with decent views of the station.

Well, had a good day - quite a bit of freight through. Lots off 66's, couple of 92s, 90s, pair of 86's - always good to see them! And a Arriva 67 with DVT and no coaches. Maybe Nuneaton at the end of November.

I went to Stafford today to mainly see the new Pendolino coaches hauled by a 56 but turned out to be an 86 and saw plenty of freight.

The problem with spotting from a pub is that, after a while, all the trains appear to be double headed!
