Just a quick one Does anyone know what length a turntables diameter relates to? Is it the full diameter of the table, or the maximum recommended loco diameter. I am curious as the turntable at rowsley is quoted as being 60ft diameter, but oliver cromwell fitted on just fine, despite being 68ft buffer - buffer (so about 63-64ft allowing for the wheelbase being less). It's certainly a tight fit. Unfortunately it doesn't really show the tender's wheels but the front wheels are virtually over the edge of the turntable - by that I mean the wheel is on the rail but the 9 o'clock/west edge is over. There's more than 2ft of overhang at the front end, maybe as much as 4', and probably about the same on the back. I've always assumed it was the length of the rails, on the deck. There will be more than a 5 foot distance from buffers to the centre of the outer wheels. There is at least one turntable (Yeovil?) that has "extension" pieces fitted to allow even larger loco's to use it. Log in to reply |

I think the P&DSR table at Churston (ex Happy Valley at Goodrington) has extensions which enabled one of the large LMS pacifics to be turned a couple of years ago
