Hi all,

Am currently working on a timetable and need to add in a freight working.

On the data source I am using (OTT) the train in question is a STP (Short-term Planned Working) and is limited to 60mph. So I guess the headcode to be 6Zxx. There is also a run round before the train leaves which I guess would be identified as 0Zxx. Two queries though:

1. OTT gives the motive power as "Diesel-hauled (1000 tonne load)". I know not the composition / cargo of the train which is described as "09:00 Gloucester Yard Junction to Newton Abbot Hackney Yard Freightliner Heavy Haul". Question is: what motive power would I use for this train, and how long would I make the train?

2. Although I could drop the engine run round (0Zxx) how long would I make the engine involved with this movement?

3. Does it matter what I put as the last two numbers on the train codes? A search on Yahoo! for a similar train turns up a headcode idea of 6Z52 so I could use that, I guess?

When was this supposed to have ran?

Tried looking in South West Rail Gen, usually reports 6Z movements, on;y ones recorded today is a 6Z27 Newton Abbot Hackney Yard - Westbury.

There was a 6Z52 Newton Abbot to Gloucester New Yard at the end of last year, with a Colas Class 56 with log wagons. Being a new log terminal down that way, it's hard to determine if the train you are looking for is a Class 56 log train, or a Class 66 engineers train for Hackney Yard.

If you know what date it's for, I'll have a look on the groups I'm signed up for, but will all depend on weather someone actually recorded it, or if it actually ran at all.

If the train in question is operated by Freightliner Heavy Haul, then the loco would undoubtly be a Cl.66/5 or a Cl.70, but personally my money would be on a Cl.66/5 as there are more of them. To work out the length of the train accuartely you would need a freight train loads book, as that not only gives you the maximum trailing tonnage the various classes of loco can pull, but also gives you the maximum length limit in SLUs for the route the train is booked to run & by using the 'Length Calculator'(available in the downloads section) created by jc92 & myself would tell you in metres what the SLU length is. I'll have a look through my loads books & see what the length limit is for Gloucester - Newton Abbott.

Just a suggestion but I would have thought the photo gallery topic on the forum would be a good place to look and it was started as a source of information for timetable writers who can look at the photos & if any of them cover a location covered by a sim it would give them an idea of what type of trains were running in that area. With over 105 pages now there has got to be one that covers what you are looking for and a right good read whilst your looking

If it's FLHH going to Hackney Yard then the chances are it's Ballast Traffic.

I would suggest joining Midland Wagons Yahoo Gen group as they will often report what wagons are on trains. Then you just need to find a web site which lists wagon numbers against type and another for wagon lengths.

for a Freightliner heavy haul, best bets are on a 66/5 (don't think ive seen any 70s on ballast yet?). Wagon wise, you could go with NRs Bogie ballast hoppers? maybe try a gen site or youtube for videos and pictures of ballast into hackney yard to give you an idea of the size of train

it would from a realism/accuracy point of view, but im sure any two digits will do if the originals cant be sourced.

The 6*** sounds okay, but why the *Z**? Many freight schedules are put in as STPs, but the relevant character is used for that journey. (eg: *V** for traffic heading to the Western region, *O** for the Southern, etc)

Not always though? The Teingrace (spelling?) - Chirk freight train (logs) is running today as 6Z52, appears every week or so and still runs as 'Z'

I've still absolutely no idea why it runs a "Z" either. The ones that come down from Carlisle run as a "J".

I am trying to incorporate some freight into this TT: something I am not normally known for doing. It is a pity that the headcodes are not given on ITT.

Hello Dave,

I have a reply, it's 6Z50 Gloucester New Yard to Newton Abbot, with a Colas class 56 (19 meters) which would stable overnight behind platform 4, if needed, but apparently hasn't been observed as running recently, but your choice weather to add a percentage to it, or just run it for interest :)

As for length, unsure as I'm more interested in the loco at the front, but the empties can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-F99gs9qLI

6Z50 basically would only run if 6Z52 does not run.

Assuming they are OTA wagons??

That train would be 180M in length with a max speed of 60MPH

If you download the 'Length Calculator' in the SimSig downloads section it will calculate the length for you & give you the maximum speed. JC92 & I created it for timetable writers to get there train lengths correct instead of guessing. The 2 axle wagons for timber are OTAs & if I remember correctly they too are included in the 'length calculator' under the wagons tab.
