I see from reading the BBC web pages that the West Coast line is suffering with overhead cables coming down. Last week it was the East Coast line. This is now becoming a regular occurrence and a bit of an embarrassment for Network Rail. Surely it is time to do something with existing infrastructure than spending millions on new High Speed routes that are only of use years into the future. Is it time for a radical rethink......bring back steam is what I say

More to the point I'd say come back British Railways, all is forgiven instead of the 'Mickey Mouse' railway network & the way it's run today.

surely diesel would be a better choice with better point to point times, less maintenance, more availability and lower crewing costs? or 3rd rail for that matter?

Be interesting to see the figures for the incidence of OHLE problems on railways outside the UK to see whether it is a specific UK problem. If it is then NR has a clear case to answer. If it isn't then we are shooting at the wrong target by castigating the current set-up.

From our earlier discussion on the ECML I understood that this sort of thing did not happen on the WCML because of the type of OH infrastructure.

The perception has always been that the headspan set-up on the ECML was more vulnerable than the portals used on the WCML. There is a picture on the BBC News web-site that appears to show a portal in the distance and some severely tangled knitting in the foreground.

Edited on 02/03/13. BBC article has been updated and a new picture posted clearly showing portal structures rather than headspans.

Network Rail also published a photo from the incident site on Twitter. As an occasional cross-stitcher as well as someone attempting to travel on the WCML this morning, seeing that much tangle filled me with dread on multiple levels!

That's a rather interesting looking mess ain't it! But note it's only one of the four roads - the other three contact wires appear completely unaffected. But there will need to be an isolation on at least 3 out of the 4 while the tangle is cut free - insufficient separation between the 25kV conductors for staff to work safely. Where they will score is speed of reopening - only one road to restring (and possibly that can be done at night, allowing 3 out of 4 roads to be reopened in the interim).

By late morning there was a limited through service running. I'd turned up at Manchester Piccadilly 90 minutes early, prepared to go via Sheffield and the MML, only to be told that 1tph was now running and I should wait for my booked train, an hour and a half later and full up because it was carrying three trains' worth of passengers. (First class was almost empty, of course.) But we got to London only about 15 minutes late after special stops at Rugby, MKC and Watford Jn. I think they'd recovered everything by the end of the day.
