I have my profile set to show "last posts first" rather than the default "first posts first" so that I see the most recent posts at the top of the topic when I open it. With first posts first, the originating post for the topic is shown as #1 and the others follow in numerical sequence from that. With last posts first, the posting at the top of the list which is the most recent posting for the topic shows as #1 with the older posting numbered on from there. Apart from anything else, this means that every posting in last posts first view is renumbered every time a new posting is made to the topic. If I set it to last post first it behaves as you describe.
