Hi all, I'm considering getting a new laptop with Win8 and, out of interest, I am wondering if there a members on here who participate in multiplayer on a laptop with I'd assume wireless internet rather than the traditional desktop via adsl or physical/fixed internet connection?

By "wireless" do you mean Wi-Fi via a router/modem to a wired broadband, or using a 3G/4G modem (probably USB ones)? I had used Wi-Fi to join and host a few times, and the connection is stable enough to allow me to do that. However if you are using a 3G/4G connection I am not so sure. Log in to reply |

3G is more than adequate for playing as a client. I never tried hosting on it, but that was more due to not being able to get it to work than bandwidth issues. SimSig doesn't really use much bandwidth so I would have thought it should work. There are many people who use WiFi to host with no problem. Log in to reply |

I use a WiFi connection to play as a client on my Dell Inspiron 1520 (which is unbelievably slow with Windows, but runs CrunchBang Linux very nicely!). Not hosted on WiFi yet, but that's only cos I haven't got time to dedicate 2/3+ hours in the evening to it. Sam Sam Wainwright Log in to reply |

Hi, If it's Wi-Fi then as long as you have a good signal it should be ok. Hosting takes very little bandwidth. I use 3g/HSDPA at home, but when i host I use a server I have in a data center (For other reasons them Simsig) ths guarantees 100% connectivity for players. One thing you may not notice on 3g is that the connection can drop for a small time. Usually this is not noticed, but may be noticed if you are hosting. IE everyone get's disconnected. That said, Afro (don't quote me on this) uses 3g in Dublin to host, and reports no problems. Log in to reply |

most wireless these days is Wireless-N and this should have all the bandwidth you will ever need to play multi or host

Multiplay as a client requires very few bandwith, and you really don't need 4G or wifi-N for that. During the gameplay it uses only 1kB/s upload & download (got this data from Linux system monitor (gnome)), it only needs more when loading the game; with a slow connection it might take a bit more time to load after connecting but that's all.

" said:most wireless these days is Wireless-NCan you cite the survey that showed that? Few people I know have N, most people still use G. The problem with using 3G/HSDPA is getting the port forwarded through, most providers use NAT. Hosting using Windows 8 over Wifi shouldn't be an issue though. " said: Hah, I doubt that you'll ever get a provider that will give you 100%, 99.999 is a challenge. Last edited: 14/05/2013 at 12:20 by Sacro Log in to reply |

BTW, thanks to those who have replied so far. I've already learnt something so far. If anyone has a good tip regarding specs (or just something to consider) for the comp or anything related just drop a line in here. Nil. Last edited: 16/05/2013 at 13:20 by Aurora Log in to reply |

I have only ever hosted using a wifi connection, and have done so using both Windows and Ubuntu linux. I have only ever had 1 issue where all players were kicked off for no apparent reason, or all but one or something like that.

Fair point, but 99.999 is only 0.001% away from 100% Near enough :) That said nothing is 100% true or accurate. But my premise stands. Log in to reply |

I've never had a problem hosting on my laptop. I have the router on 5GHZ and no port forwarding as it is in DMZ mode.

One incident that springs to mind was a major issue in the data centre so our Fed-Ex shipment facilities in Europe sent 200 people home since they had no parts to pack. Those people were paid for going home and the bill came our way. Log in to reply |

" said:" said:By "wireless" do you mean Wi-Fi via a router/modem to a wired broadband, or using a 3G/4G modem (probably USB ones)? Oh, I had made a mistake. There are some notebook computers which have a mini PCI-E slot inside and you can install a 3G modem card inside the computer, so you don't even need a USB modem. There is one thing that I would like to know, what method are you currently using to connect to the Internet at the place(s) where you might be using the notebook computer? Log in to reply |
