On the panel and in the real life photo in the manual, the barrow crossing doesn't extend across the track passing through Platform 3. After giving permission for a heavy load to cross, I set a route from Platform 3 to Bathhampton (signals 111-115), only to be told I'd misrepresented the crossing as being safe. Does SimSig regard this track as one that must be clear of traffic too, before permission to cross can be granted? Last edited: 09/07/2013 at 03:29 by maxand Log in to reply |

Can't say that I've come across this before, but as the panel diagram shows Barrow Crossing only stretches between the down reception and platforms 1 and 2, I can only assume it is a bug. That said, however, this pic from the sim manual does show a crossing between platforms 3 and the up reception. Perhaps it's the diagram that's wrong? there appears to be the barrow crossing as represented on the sim which has red/green protection, and a second crossing which is a staff walkway to the yard which Doesnt have red/green protection. to my mind, each is a separate crossing, as say for instance a Barrow wants to use the main crossing to access from P1- P2, it doesnt block trains using P3, and equally someone coming from the depot to P3 wouldnt prevent trains using P1 and P2. Ive never held a train from P3 if the barrow crossing is occupied becuase the diagram presents it as safe, but equally ive never had the resultant issue maxand has encountered either. On the real panel the Barrow crossing straddles the Down reception and Nos 1 and 2 lines (to give their proper title) The crossing on the right is for railwaymen on crew changes. There are now lifts at Westbury station so I suspect the Barrow Crossing sees little if any use nowadays. Last edited: 08/07/2013 at 18:43 by TomOF Log in to reply |

I suspect the Barrow crossing is a relic from the time when stations handled Parcel and Mail traffic, hence the name Barrow Crossing. I,m not familar with Westbury so I can,t say what the criteria was for phoning for permission to cross except that it was unlikely to have been used to take a flock of sheep over the crossing (Unlike the Sim)

I personally thought it's a type of crossing, as there is, or was, a Barrow crossing at Bradford-on-Avon too. None are in the Quail map as an official crossing. I suspect it could have been used for parcels/mail, but would have been useful for wheelchair users or those unable to use the stairs. Seen it in use for the latter reason before the lifts were installed. Same at Bradford-on-Avon but I believe it's gone as there's a new ramp footbridge/exit. Thanks for all your replies. I meant to write "Westbury barrow crossing" in the thread title but the forum software didn't permit this length, so I shortened it to "Barrow Crossing" and have corrected this to distinguish it from a crossing at a location named Barrow (matter of fact, my brother in law lives there). I don't know whether the term "barrow crossing" is used in Australia. However, John is correct; there is a second barrow crossing (omitted from the sim) across line 3 and Up Receiving. Thanks Peter for checking the code. Well, I'll continue setting routes on line 3 while the barrow crossing is supposed to be safe, and see if this triggers another complaint! Log in to reply |

Barrow crossings won't be marked in Quail, because they're not level crossings found in the Sectional Appendix (and so don't require legal authority), but simply staff "walking" routes.

I tried occupying segments TWDD, TWDE on line 3 after receiving request from "confused driver" to cross. This did not prevent driver from crossing successfully, so I guess something else must have caused earlier alert. Thanks Peter for suggesting I try it. Since this is a barrow crossing and not a level crossing, I can only assume that the reason for the driver's confusion is that he mistook line 3 for a road. If TWDD occupancy persists after I unoccupy it, the most likely cause would be his car or truck lying across line 3, thus causing the voltage to drop. However, this could easily be rectified by my directing him, when next he telephones me, to the second barrow crossing further west, as John observed in post #2, and advising him to make a right turn there. Once he enters the Up yard, no doubt there will be someone there who can assist him to find his way home. At least he will now be clear of the main line. You'd have to be a very confused driver to be trying to take a car across the barrow crossing

Perhaps the "confused driver waiting to cross" message should be "dumb driver blindly following Satnav directions" nowadays? :doh

Nobody should really need to phone to use the barrow crossing anyway, it has a white light to show when the crossing is clear to be used. It is not possible to get a car over the crossing anyway, let alone a flock of sheep or a herd of cows! Log in to reply |

Maybe the 'heavy load' was just a big suitcase?

I think it is a long time Tim since cattle have been moved by rail in this manner. A heavy suitcase is I suppose a possibility that might generate a call from the platform staff to the panel. I do know that whenever a wheelchair is taken across the barrow crossing at Bodmin Parkway the staff call Lostwithiel Signal Box for clearance first, but that crossing is not interlocked with the signalling system. Just another minor point. When a train has passed the barrow crossing, "Barrow Crossing Clear" appears in Messages. To indicate that this is not a location name, "Barrow crossing clear" seems preferable.
