Marylebone, Brighton and Carlisle all have wall sidings but Googling hasn't given me any clues as to what one actually is. Are they all separate sidings with nothing in common apart from being next to walls? Or is a wall siding a particular type of siding?

Victoria has one too, alongside Grosvenor Road Sidings.

Although it's part of the sidings complex, it's the only road that's not undercover. That's the only difference.

And it's next to a wall.

All of which reminds me of post #28 from this thread.

Ha, I must admit I actually had that post vaguely in the back of my mind when I wrote this one! It's an excellent book, by the way, strongly recommended and available on Amazon.

The one at Marylebone had its name adopted from what the local staff called it in mechanical days, which was formally carried over into the IECC.

It is simply named because it is up against the wall of the overall roof.

Man Vic had the 'Wall-side Pilot'; a standby engine for all occasions!

Its official name (in the 1967 box at least) was the 'Up Platform Siding' (I've no idea what it was originally named). What we actually called it in 1980 was the 'Wall Side'.

Ain't tradition wonderful?
