Note the caveat within the article: "English Heritage said some of the listed buildings could be "rejuvenated" as cafes or museums, such as the 1923 signal box in Totnes, Devon.". Out of use signal boxes abandoned on the railway tend to be stripped of equipment and then rot away. I know of a couple of places where the equipment was left in situ but still deteriorated in condition. I personally like to see the whole thing retained, but would also choose to retain the building over nothing every time. Log in to reply |

Based on our experience with Horsted Keynes SB (which is listed Grade II) the listing only applies to the external features of the architecture. The signalling equipment is therefore not protected. Danny is quite right inasmuch as the frame at HK is the original 1882 Saxby & Farmer, (with a later 7 lever extension) but all the locking has been revamped more than once. Ray Log in to reply |

Well I've just come back from a few days "at home" in Broughty Ferry and they have "preserved" the old signal box in the middle of the Up platform. It was demolished a few years ago and stored but now reserected as part of a Restaurant (vacant). So its not really clear what they have preserved and what they have made up. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! The frame in the Ferry is the one from upstairs, but has been reassembled (by the firm who built the box) with the levers transposed, so number 1 is on the right as you look at it. It's also been set into concrete. The contracters simply burned the footbridge, which given the whole station including box and footbridge are category A listed, is verging on criminal. What a waste!

I meant to add that the box is almost entirely new; new wooden cladding on a new steel frame, with new windows and a new door. About the only original thing I can see on it is the name board.

I'm gobsmacked that Shrewsbury box isn't listed as it's the biggest box still working and has been the biggest still working for quite a few years!
