Can anyone provide details of how the signalling for the Heysham branch is worked now control has passed from Bare Lane Station SB to Preston PSB?

The Sectional Appendix still talks about collecting the train staff from Bare Lane SB which is clearly out of date. Travelling the line recently I noticed a new silver metal box adjacent to the ground frame.

The D&U Morecambe and D&U Heysham are worked as OTW (One Train Working) however if a train is required to traverse the U&D Heysham then the key is released by Preston PSB. This allows Morecambe Jcn GF to be operated to allow the train down the U&D Heysham. Attached by chain to the key is the Tyers Key for the CEGB GF at the power station.

A new RRI style interlocking was constructed at Bare Lane to control these arrangements with a TDM system back to Preston.

Very useful, many thanks.

Just to clarify, does the Heysham branch still require the use of a train staff? Also where do the train crew collect the keys for the ground frame now Bare Lane signal box is closed?

The key for Morecambe Jn ground frame is kept in the box by the GF itself. It's attached on a chain with a security key that is released from Preston panel. I presume the same key works the power station GF - but I've never tried it!

Officially Bare Lane - Heysham is one OTW section. The GF key is just that, not a separate staff - you cannot 'lock in' to the Morecambe - Heysham line and run another train from Bare - Morecambe on the Down & Up Heysham side.
