Brading Signal Box & Station 19/08/2013 at 21:23 #48612

On a recent visit to the Isle of Wight I decided to take a trip from Brading to Smallbrook junction on one of the island’s 1938 tube stock. I arrived at Brading to find that the station had recently undergone restoration work. There was the usual stuff like a tea room with old photos etc, but then I found out more. There is a small museum about the Island’s railways that was completely free! There were several full size model people sitting on the disused platform. One man looked very creepy as the wind made his hands and newspaper shake as if he was alive! And then the restoration group were offering tours of the restored signal box at only £1 per person.

The tour was brilliant! First they took you into the signal box room and gave you full control over the levers. The levers are not connected to any signals or track so they can be pulled at any time. If you have no signalling experience they teach you how to do a few movements, but if like me you have previous experience you can do anything you like! They then show you the room where the levers connect to the rods to control the points/signals on the ground floor and tell you abit about it. After that you are shown around the restored platforms and the tour ends.

For the £1 price it was a very good tour and I can’t recommend it enough. The group have plans to move towards obtaining some rolling stock and reinstalling some track at the station if they can generate the funds, maybe even a loco or two!

So in conclusion, Brading station and signal box is well worth a visit, especially if you have an interest in signalling. They are open in the summer holidays 11am-3pm daily.
