I have today submitted a timetable for the above sim subject to mods approval. Please note the numeric Headcodes which are as in thw WTT

Ah yes, the headcodes. They were unique to the LTS. The 2nd character was a route indication; I don't recall what they all were but I do recall it was strict enough that you could do the whole job by looking for that 2nd digit.

The SECOND character (usually alpha) are as follows

1 Down trains via Upminster
2 Up trains via Upminster
3 Down trains via Tilbury
4 Up trains via Tilbury
5 trains to/from East Ham Depot
6 trains Terminating at Barking Up/Down T&H line
7 Ockenden Branch trains
8 Up trains via Forest Gate Jcn
9 Down trains required to run Goods Line at Barking or calling at Ripple lane, also Up trains Terminating at Ripple Lane

Thanks... my memory certainly doesn't extend to that sort of detail. I'm pretty certain 9 was in use too, for trains to/from Ripple Lane (so in practice was the main code used from Woodgrange Park). I don't recall the code for trains to Barking from the T&H but suspect that was yet another. Did Ockendon have its own code too? And the Laindon and Leigh-on-Sea services? These are details I really don't recall at all.

According to my 1978 Sectional:

1 Down train via Upminster line
2 Up trains via Upminster line
3 Down trains via Tilbury line
4 Up trains via Tilbury line
5 Trains to and from East Ham Depot
6 Down T&H line trains terminating at Barking; Up T&H line train
7 Ockenden Branch trains; East Smithfield, Upton Park
8 Up trains via Forest Gate Jn
9 Down trains required to run Goods Line at Barking, terminating at or calling at Ripple Lane for traffic or relief purposes. Also Up trains terminating at Ripple Lane

Romford-Upminster trains are 2A02 down 2A03 up.

Thank you Clive. So the only people who needed anything other than the 2nd digit were Laindon/Leigh/S'end who needed to decide whether a train was a terminator. Barking just did everything using the 2nd digit, as did Upminster & Pitsea. Romford - Upminster never appeared on a LTS box once the connections were taken out (probably 1960s).

East Smithfield... there's a name to conjure with! I wonder whether it was ever used even by 1978? I certainly don't recall any sign of the connections by '81. Upton Park remained in use though (and was a confounded nuisance, when the lighweight scrap strip loaded there blew out of a wagon & caused a TC failure at the ground frame)!

Did the formation now in use by the DLR belong to BR at this time (Limehouse to Christian Street)?

Yes it did. There were 4 tracks all the way to Limehouse (which was actually named Stepney East until the mid-'80s).

Originally the southern pair went straight on, where the DLR now runs on an old viaduct across Limehouse Basin (formerly Regents Canal Dock) - they presumably were the original trackbed of the Blackwall Railway. The other 2 tracks went round the corner at Stepney East, heading for Gas Factory Junction and Barking. I imagine there were crossovers at Stepney but don't know the configuration. In 1949 the line from Fenchurch to Stratford via Gas Factory was electrified at 1500V DC. (Bays were provided at Stratford, one of which is now used by the DLR, and for a time a service ran in connection with the LV - Shenfield electric trains. Remember that, although most trains at Fenchurch were LMS, the Midland Railway having purchased the LT&SR in about 1911, Fenchurch - Gas Factory was LNER, the Blackwall Railway having leased itself to the Eastern Counties Railway and ending up in the LNER at grouping. I have the impression that service didn't last very long.)

LTS electrification in 1960-ish led to Stepney being reconfigured. The line to Poplar was severed and the junctions realigned to allow considerably higher speeds (30 mph!) for all trains. At this time, Stepney East box was abolished and a panel added to the 1937 miniature-lever box at Fenchurch to control the junctions at Stepney and Gas Factory. The Fenchurch station area and the auto sections from Stepney had no train describers; signalmen worked it the way they always had, keeping track of trains by memory, train register and whatever aide-memoires they came up with (I suspect originally trains were described to & from Stepney by bell only). That panel was the cause of not a few cock-ups in the peak. It included transmitting apparatus for the describers; for each down line there were 6 apertures so up to 12 descriptions could be set up; as each train approached Stepney it picked up the next description on its line, which was duly transmitted to Barking. The peaks were busy enough that it was often worth setting up a full house of descriptions on each road while things were quiet, in anticipation of the more hectic moments. Descriptions, of course, were entered in accordance with the lines trains were timetabled to run on. Which was fine until the Fenchurch man put a train out on t'other road (nothing wrong with that) and for some reason the Panel man didn't realise there had been a change. For some reason it most often seemed to involved a passenger picking up the description for East Ham Cars or v.v. Everyone continued in blissful ignorance until the wrong-described train got to BK14 signal and rang in to challenge the wrong route, by which time there were rather a lot of wrong-described trains in the auto sections and every train had to be stopped and asked its description (no radios then and the rules still said a driver should wait 2 minutes before ringing in from the signal)! All good clean fun, it says here (though the East Ham drivers on finishing turns didn't seem to think so for some reason ).

Christian Street Junction was formed when 2 tracks were ceded for the DLR in the '80s. I don't know quite what was done with the panel but certainly Fenchurch box continued in use until the early '90s so it may have had a new skin, or even been entirely renewed.

It strikes me this might be a bit of a challenge to work on the current layout. Quite apart from 4 tracks continung all the way to Limehouse at the time, there were many more sections (and 4-aspect signalling) throughout from Fenchurch to Barking. Between Fenchurch and Limehouse the signal spacing was extraordinarily tight - 200-odd yards if I remember rightly, so the AWS ramp was adjacent to the signal in rear and the overlap extended through to the signal in advance. Quite an impressive installation to see from the cab!
