Licence Manager Problem 26/08/2013 at 08:08 #48853

I purchased Marylebone yesterday and since then have been trying to log in to the Licence Manager to update it. I keep getting the message 'Unable to log in to server'

I have downloaded and re-installed the system files and the Licence Manager. I can log in to Simsig as you can see but the Licence Manager cannot. I have checked the Wiki and followed the instruction meticulously but the Licence Manager can still not log in to the server.

I do not have any problems with the new launcher which runs ok and starts the new sims as it should.

Yes, my sign-on and password are both correct.

I know there have been recent problems with the issue of licences but this should not prevent me logging into the Licence Manager.

I know you said the sign-on and password are correct but please could you try changing the password (on this site) to something very simple, then try the same password on the License Manager?

[Edit] Oh, and is an error code reported when you try to log in?

Do you get this window appearing, in particular the password blanks as circles and not '######'?

I got the circles with the shortcut but on re-downloading the the Licence Manager I get the hash marks.

I have changed my password as suggested but still cannot connect to the server. I have also tried the link 'forgot password' and it takes me to the Simsig site.
I don't get an error code only a message that it cannot connect to the server.

I have tried logging in with both the desktop shortcut and the application on my C drive at the default install location.

As you can see, I can log in to the Simsig site and forum without difficulty.

I take it you have typed in your username and password to the manager and not assumed it's auto-populated correctly?

While that doesn't explain the log in difficulties, you do appear to have two different versions of the License Manager which will cause problems. Probably you have two versions installed in two different places. Please try to locate the version with hash symbols and delete it - better would be uninstalling SimSig completely and starting again, but I'm not sure this alone would cure having two different versions. Please remember to reboot after un-installation and after re-installation to ensure Windows is in a stable state.

"Forgot password" does indeed take you to this site - by design. The License Manager and SimSig website use the same storage for the usernames and passwords.

The fact you only get "cannot connect to server" suggests it's more fundamental than a password issue though. It can't even get to the server, let alone actually try to log in. Please try the uninstallation/reinstallation and see where that gets us.

Typed both in to be sure.

I have also uninstalled both system files and licence manager, rebooted, re-installed the system files, rebooted. Now currently awaiting the Licence Manager to connect.

Could you PM me your IP address please? You can click on "User"->"What's my IP" to find this information. I can then check the raw access logs.

Completely uninstalled, scanned computer to ensure all remnants deleted, then re-installed. Licence Manager will still not connect.

Getting to the point now of conceding defeat.

PM received. I can see normal browsing requests from that IP in the logs. However, there is only one attempt to get anything to do with the License Manager - and that's the "lost password" link which redirects to the website lost password page. Nothing at all from the SimSig License Manager application (but there are from other users). Your IP isn't blacklisted otherwise you wouldn't be able to post here either.

What version of Windows are you running, and what firewalls and anti-virus programs do you have? Could be one of these blocking outgoing connection attempts.

I am using Windows 8 but was not a problem before. I use AVG antivirus and Advanced System Care, both I have checked and are not blocking the Licence Manager. My firewalls are switched off.

I have now uninstalled the system files, Loader and Licence Manager, and have now gone through my registry to clear out all references to the Licence Manager. I will attempt a re-install.

I have re-installed the system files, I have activated the firewall and given the License Manager permissions to access the internet.
Still does not work.

I will have to accept the fact that I can no longer use Simsig.

Please retain the payment for Marylebone as a donation, you have done excellent work over the years.

I've not heard of Advanced System Care, though 150m downloads would suggest it's not obscure. I'm sure plenty here have W8 and AVG and don't have problems so we can rule those out.

Can any forum readers suggest anything else?

Thank you but we'll firstly try to get to the bottom of this, and if all else fails then it would only be right to return the money.

Just suggesting: Can it be something related to HTTP Proxy? DNS resolution? HTTP cache?

I too have Windows 8 running AVG free antivirus but I have no issues accessing the License Manager V3.248 or the Loader or anything like that. If there are any settings I can check to help you along please let me know. I don't (to my knowledge) use the Advance System Care you mentioned though if that makes any difference. My laptop is an HP.

Reading about Advance System Care, I tend to believe that it is causing your problem. It blocks anything and everthing unless you change the settings. Do you need it considering you are using Windows 8?

Not having the Advance System Care myself I don't know if this is available but is it possible to temporarily disable the Advance System Care for a few minutes to try to see if it changes anything? If you have already tried this then apologies.

I agree with alvinhochun’s suggestion: while it’s not the only thing that would explain this behaviour, an HTTP proxy would explain it perfectly: if your Web browser is using a proxy to connect, then you’d have no trouble visiting the website, but if the license manager didn’t use the same proxy, you might not be able to connect from within it—assuming the license manager uses HTTP, which I don’t know off-hand.

Just an update, I am in the process of puutting together a new computer, just waiting for the hard drive to arrive.

Hopefully next week I should be up and running again.

I have downloaded the licence manager onto the new computer and I now have Marylebone which is working well. Fault must be somehow on my laptop which I will now give to my son.

I have also requested that my other licences be transferred to the new computer.

Thanks to all those that gave advice and help.
