I went to portsmouth yesterday via SWT and on the express return I noticed that instead of going via woking, we went via Oxshott instead of woking. Any reason for this?

If I've done this correctly this seems to be every train that passed Oxshott yesterday. Includes some runs as required which did not run.

Yep, it was booked however all the trips I've made in the past year to uni and back, we've always gone via Woking. Quite odd as well seeing it was going much slower than it would on the mainline, kinda defeating the purpose of it being the express service?

I don't know much about services in that area, but from what I can tell your service was only 6 minutes longer than the usual xx:15 service from Portsmouth.

Perhaps it's a route knowledge train for some drivers? Or it runs that way to allow extra trains during the peak in the Woking area?

That looks like the main reason - all 8-10am or 6-8pm timings

Yep, a few in the morning and evening peak routed via the New Line so they use the grade-separated Hampton Court junction instead of the flat one at Woking.

Fratton drivers drive some via the "new line" for route retention...
