Evening all, Just a heads up that the Rhymney Valley line in South Wales is closed for engineering works this weekend. In relation to this the signalboxes at Heath Junction (opened 1984 to replace original box), Ystrad Mynach (opened 1886) and Bargoed (moved from Cymer Afan in 1970 to replace original Bargoed box) will close for the final time after the passage of the last trains and more than 125 years of Absolute Block signalling in the Rhymney valley will cease. Presumably Bargoed & Heath Junction SBs will be demolished but my undeerstanding is that YM has a preservation order on it and may be destined for the museum at St. Fagans. Might be difficult to move though: I heard somewhere that the walls supporting YM box are about 2ft thick. The plan, apparently, is to demolish the base brick by brick and move it. HTIOI, Dave (PS: Not sure if the 1886 date for YM is correct: the source that gives this date originally said 1890.) Last edited: 06/09/2013 at 19:20 by DaveHarries Log in to reply |
