Back in 1983 (I think it must have been) Dundee University Transport club did a visit and walk on the Bridge. We started at Dalmeny and walked to around the middle as I recall. We went up the South stone tower but otherwise we just remained at rail level. I have a load of photographs somewhere. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Myself and a group of fellow YTS trainees did the same in 1985 but some of us (most chickened out) got the opportunity to walk along a catwalk running under the rail level. My abiding memory of it was that there was only a hand-rail on one side!

They're building the third Forth crossing, or is the the second Forth Road crossing? I believe the (first) Forth Bridge is also the only bridge on the railway network not to have a bridge reference number, being simply known as "The Bridge". I can only help one person a day. " said:They're building the third Forth crossing, or is the the second Forth Road crossing?To be pedantic it'll be the fifth Forth bridge across the Firth of Forth or the fourth Forth road bridge - there's Kincardine Bridge and Clackmannanshire Bridge too. Further upstream near Alloa there's the remains of a railway swing bridge. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Many years ago I did a visit to the Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash. We walked out along the track to the Devon Tower where we climbed up the ladder to the entrance door and walked inside the tubes to the Cornish Tower. We walked back over the top of the tubes to the Devon Tower and climbed down again. There were two railings, one above the other on the top of the tubes. The lower, original one at ankle height and the higher on at knee height. There was a force 6 blowing up the river, we were told to keep to the windward side of the railing. The experience has totally put me off heights (I freaked out at the top of the Eifel Tower) so those doing the Forth Bridge Experience are welcome to it!! Log in to reply |
