I'm unsure offhand whether OSX will allocate a link local ipv4 address, I know Windows does. Otherwise you'll either need to have some kind of DHCP server (again, OSX might be able to do that), or to allocate IPs manually. If it's a network/ethernet cable between two PCs then doesn't it need to be a crossover cable rather than the more common straight-through cable?
