At Alexandra Palace on the ECML there used to be some sidings in the V between the main and Hertford routes, called Rowntrees Sidings. They were there when King's Cross PSB opened and they aren't there now. Does anyone know when they closed? Log in to reply The following user said thank you: northroad |

A complete guess would be 1987/8 - that being the time that Rowntrees Sidings in the York area closed. There where also sidings once served on the Tyne and Wear Metro that survived up until around that time Log in to reply The following user said thank you: northroad |

I have a scan of Modern Railways article on the 1976/7 rebuild that has the track diagram. It used to be uploaded to an earlier SimSig site (with MR's permission). I'll dig it out again. Clive, The following link to the LNER encyclopedia forum may be of some help http://www.lner.info/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6929&hilit=changes+kings+cross+to+wood+green&start=45 Page 4 of the thread does have a picture taken in steam days looking north fron the Hertford Loop flyover and does show the ends of the sidings that I think you are talking about. An interesting thread to read throughout. Looking at a 1968 WTT there was a daily pick up freight to Wood Green although I cannot say it was to the Rowentrees Sidings. I do believe this continued for a few years after this date but maybe wrong on this. Thanks for posting this. Geoff Clive, Afurther update on this. If you look at the pictures referred to on Page 4 of the forum I think the siding you are talking about is shown on the picture of the troop train being pulled by Dwight D Eisenhower in 1962. Sorry, people, I wasn't clear. The sidings were definitely still there when the present PSB opened in 1976/7 and the line was electrified. They were entered via signal K117 slotted with Wood Green C Ground Frame. They shut some time after that, probably the 1980s or 1990s. But when?

Clive, Looking at an old Quail map book that I have dated March 1988 there is no siding shown on the point where you are talking about. I.e the West side of the ECML Down Slow. There is a single spur shown extending underneath the Hertford loop bridge which is accessed via the Hertford by pass line which joins the Up Slow before Alexandra Palace.
