62 posts 		I've noticed on my travels within London, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bristol/Bath and Gloucester of yellow things in between the running rails, usually in close proximity to junctions/points/tight curves. Anyone know what they are and what purpose they serve?

Nah, much smaller; looks like its got a bolt going through the middle

edit: also positioned on each sleeper

6376 posts 		Add axle counters to the possibilities, though I'm not convinced from the brief description. I would lean towards greasers as well but these are usually outside the rails, not inside.

The picture in the 2nd post in this thread is an AWS magnet and the original poster has already said it's not that...

What about a hot box detector? Are they yellow?

JetBalast787: Can you find a picture of what you are referring to? Just saying it's a yellow thing between the rails is too vague as it could be one of several things as you can see form the responses so far....

Stephen:
HABDs aren't between the running rails, what was sought after was said to be between running rails, and TASS Balisses don't fit the geography of the area suggested.

Sleeper Anchors seems most likely to me

I imagine it's owing to higher track forces through curves and pointwork

4869 posts 		They seem to had a spate over the last couple of years installing them up the North Wales Coast, Chester has a fair amount, and I can remember a long run of them adjacent to Conwy Castle last time I was up that way.

As someone who has regularly maintained HABD, I am more than qualified to conclude that the components in the four foot can be yellow. Some parts of the actual detector are in the cess and six foot, but there is still equipment in the middle. Professional Railwaymen do generally know what they are on about when they post something.

As the original poster identified sleeper anchors from Karls photo it is fairly conclusive this is what he was after.

In all reality, there can be any number of yellow items in the four foot, and an even greater number of things sprayed yellow for various reasons such as tamper avoidance.
