Merhead permission not given 09/02/2014 at 11:30 #55280

Currently playing the Winter 2004 TT for Westbury (v4.2 build 2) and I have found a problem at Merehead. The first train went in with no problems but the next two have reported "Permission not given" when they had permission and the slot!

Is this an undocumented feature?

It's a pity that Witham isn't marked on the panel, so I'm none the wiser as to where the "Witham relay interlocking area" might be. (If you're not Witham, you're without 'em.) Signal 120 turns out to be just before the turnoff at East Somerton junction on the way to Cranmore, which includes Merehead.

It would have helped if you included a screen shot of the actual panel at the time so we can see where the other trains are and what their headcodes are.

"0C30 did not have permission (Merehead Quarry)" tells me that you either forgot to get permission for 0C30 to enter Merehead, or (more likely) that you got permission for some train other than 0C30 to enter Merehead, then sent 0C30 in. Was 0C30 the first of the three you mentioned? You will need to apply to Merehead for permission for each train you wish to send there, and in the correct order. Permission is usually denied to the following train unless the current one has actually arrived at Merehead, so it may be smart to get them off the main line and hold them in one of the sidings or branch loop (signal 324) until permission is given.

I got permission for each train, and did not request permission for a following train until the preceding one had arrived at the quarry. So it wasn't anything that I did that caused the error.

Seems to be a problem for all trains but it's not clear why at the moment.

It's not happening with every train - the next train after that error message went in with no problems.

A bit confusing I agree. Here is a bit more information.

Witham is actually known as Witham Friary which is a nearby village. It was originally the junction for the Cheddar Valley Railway which ran from the junction at Witham through to Cranmore, Wells, Cheddar and Yatton. This 31-mile line opened in stages: to Shepton Mallet in 1858, Wells in 1862, Cheddar in 1869 and Yatton in 1870 with the whole lot closing to passengers in 1963 and Freight (Merehead - Yatton) just a year later.

Nowadays, Witham is where the branch line to the ESR (East Somerset Railway, the remaining stub of the Yatton line) and Merehead Quarry heads off from the main line to Castle Cary. Originally known as Witham Friary Junction the site is now known as East Somerset Junction. The continued existence of freight traffic to Merehead Quarry meant that the signalbox, opened c.1876 and rebuilt in 1896, stayed open until Westbury PSB took control of the area effective 24-Nov-1984.

HTIOI,
Dave

In reality, interlocking boundaries are not generally marked on panels, only the remote overrides for an interlocking area which would of course tell you which interlocking it applied to.

Perhaps something to add to any signal number chart if one exists?

Yes I had the same problem with a couple of trains but after that it cleared and the rest went in ok. Bit strange that it actually checks that approval that has been given, as you can't set the route in, until you have received a slot. But I guess it's a generic routine that is called.

You could obtain the slot and then send in a different train, in which case the shunter might not be exactly happy, either.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Had the same problem with Merehead - but only happened with light locos. May have something to do with the time taken for the signal controlling the entry to Merehead torring before the loco arrives on the entry track circuit. I amended the timetable so that 4 locos were hauled in one train and the problem didn't occur because the last track circuit showed occupied before the signal torred.

Maybe barking up the wrong tree here so apologies of misleading the brains.

I'd like to report exactly the same problem as Dave (tbh183) while playing Westbury Project X 2020 v1.4.

Prior to this I'd played Westbury Summer 2007 v4.0, then Westbury Commuter Hub, without encountering this difficulty, probably because all trains arriving at Merehead, as far as I recall, were complete trains with a consist, not merely locos. Permission was given reasonably promptly, enabling me to see them off without undue delay.

When I changed to Project X, the first few trains into Merehead AND Whatley quarries were all locos with headcodes 0F01 - 0F07. Not only did I get the msg that the train entered without permission, but interestingly, approvals seemed to take longer and longer until finally they stalled and I was stuck with two locos, one (0F07) bound for Merehead and the other (0F04) for Whatley, both already accepted but no permissions forthcoming. At this point I quit the sim at 0620.

Dave did not mention which TT he was playing, nor the other problems as above. I'm not particularly keen to adopt Dave's timetable edit as a solution and would rather see this investigated and fixed while I try another TT. Thanks Peter Bennet for looking into this.

Apart from this, I found Project X an enjoyable but challenging TT for this great sim.

If it's any help I include the saved game.

Oh, and could "Merhead" in the title of this thread be corrected to "Merehead" please?

Running your save, as 0F07 has permission to enter Merehead, you get the driver to PSAD signal 228. Ignore the permission message. 0F04 seems to enter without any problems.
Project X is not for the faint-hearted. It requires at least 2 experienced operators.

My understanding is that even after permission is granted by phone, the signaller still has to wait for a slot permission message to appear before he can set the route, otherwise SimSig will make it impossible to set.

I ran Westbury Summer 2007 v4.0 for 24 hours, and encountered three such entries-without-permission at Merehead. All were light locomotives. I ran each of them again to reproduce the behaviour.

It has been a number of years since i have played Westbury. But it appears that there is still a problem of permissions for light engines going into Merehead Quarry
See attached for 0C59

More evidence of a problem with trains entering Merehead Quarry. This time a full length train

On the attached. @ 22:32:32 Permission given to 7V33-2. 22:32:52 slot activated
22:5:43 7V33-2 didn't have permission.

I find it strange as you can't route a train into the quarry without being given a slot.

Loader verion 4.5.9 (installed without any problems, after following the screen shots in the other thread-- thanks)

Westbury data version 4.3

(note: its not all trains, only 2 in the 24Hr period-- this and the light engine that I reported before)
