Hi all, In the next few days will mark the 25th Anniversary of the Purley rail crash in which 5 people died. The Croydon Advertiser (28th Feb 14) has a double paged spread with images and accounts of the crash. At present I have been unable to find it on their website, but will post the link if it appears. For those unfamiliar with the area or incident; Purley is situated 3 miles south of Croydon (about 13 miles from Victoria) on the London to Brighton mainline (controlled by Three Bridges). On 4th March 1989 a train from Littlehampton to Victoria ran into the back of a Horsham to Victoria train that had been traversing from the Up slow to the Up Fast. 5 people died in the incident with around 90 others injured when the front 6 (of 8)coaches of the Littlehampton train careered down an embankment into gardens of Glenn Avenue. The link below is for the official Department of Transport report into the accident which you may find interesting. http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/DoT_Purley1990.pdf Gareth Log in to reply |
