Hi, I'm looking at running a SimSig with a friend of mine I can only connect with him as a Cilent. I would like to be the server now and again if I can. My internet connection is through a netgear router. My pc uses windows 7. We tried a test connect but he can't connect to me. Thanks Log in to reply |

You need to open a port on your router, basic details can be found on the Wiki I believe.

Hi, I found the wiki page ok but portforward.com states I need a static ip to port forward from my pc is on a wireless network. Now where do I go. I'm not very IT wise so I'm not touching something I know nothing about. any other ideas portforward.com had free software advertised but I'm not sure on it being safe to use. Can anyone help me out with this or am I stuck as a client. Log in to reply |

A non-static IP should be fine - just appreciate your external IP may change from time to time. You will need to find out your internal IP address (usually starting 192.168). Simsig will tell you this, or run a command prompt and type ipconfig. You will also need to find out your external IP addreess (type "what is my IP" into google and it will tell you). You need to log in to your routers admin page, find the port forward screen and configure it for port 50505 to forward to your interal IP. hi, Still no joy I got into my router settings found a service I set up in the thread linked by postal the router asks for Lan server ip tried my default gateway ip and my internal ip. still stuck. Looks like I can't host. Postal: I changed my pc to a laptop. Log in to reply |

Think of it like this: Your router is like a signaller for internet traffic. When someone wants to connect to SimSig running on your laptop, it's a bit like the express arriving at the terminus on the up fast. Your router is currently programmed to send it into platform 1 which is your old PC. But your laptop is the equivalent to platform 2. You need to edit the timetable (reconfigure your router) to tell it to send the traffic to platform 2. Log in to reply The following user said thank you: bharrison |

Hopefully you have the service for SimSig there already. If not you will need to set it up. This is a good guide. Maybe it would help if you could post a few screen shots of your router setup. You need to set up Simsig as a service. Here's mine as an example. You should have a similar screen call services (or inbound services).

OK great. well it looks like you pretty close, but your routing to your default gateway by the looks of it. Can you go to your laptop, click the start button then type cmd and in the command prompt type ipconfig. Then paste the results here. OK so you see how my "server IP address" matches my laptop. You need to do the same. Edit your inbound services to set the "send to lan server" to 192.168.0.4 which is your laptops IP address. Once done then we can test out. Log in to reply |

Your internal IP shouldn't change too often and if it does you can make it static. Your external IP (unless you have paid for a static IP) may change regularly (or it might not), but that is outside your control. Log in to reply |

Right. Now were set to test it. Start your favourite SimSig and run as a server. Then separetely browse to this site: http://ping.eu/port-chk/ The site will helpfully show your external IP at the top. Put in the external IP and the default port 50505 and click go. If all is working it should say port is open and also in SimSig you should get a message like this:  If you get both of these - job done!
