Freightliner Heavy Haul Incident. 29/12/2009 at 18:24 #455

I saw a smallish paragraph in the paper on Monday 28/12/09 about a Freightliner Heavy Haul coal train loosing control with frozen brakes in the snow and a Virgin passenger train having to be stopped by a radio message as the Heavy Haul train was doing 75mph heading straight for it.This was around Cleghorn near Carstairs on the WCML.As usual HH were unavailable for comment!
I thought something as serious as this would be better covered in the media.Has anyone heard anything about the incident?

the media will not cover these incidents on a large scale basis as it will scare people from using the rail networks, the HH comment on this incident would have been a brown envolope to the news paper to keep it as hush hush as possible.

Osprey. There was an incident in the Carstairs area before Christmas but you have the companies involved incorrect. As I work in the railway industry and have regular dealings with one of the operators concerned I do have some information that is not publically available, however I am not prepared to discuss this incident on a public forum as any comments could be considered predjudical to any ongoing or future enquiry/investigation both internal and RAIB. As for the comment about "the brown envelope" by afro09, don't you think that if that ever happened the information would be leaked somewhere and the industry would look even worse, in the eyes of the public, than if the details were published straight away? Of course we all know that the newspapers are above reproach and entirely factual and honest in their reporting. Can I suggest that we put a lid on this thread, at least until the full facts are in the public domain

Dave.I am a railwayman aswell working around the area and have been for over 25 years.I fully understand what you are saying. The point Iam making is even more valid if the only part of the story I can come up with correctly over a week later is the fact there was an incident and the rough location and even this was second hand from a tabloid newspaper. Why is this been being guarded like a cold war secret? If something this serious has happened surely people should know? Would you want your family travelling on something that isnt safe?(apart from the mother in law etc!) I realise that you are in a position of trust as we all are and any thing any railwayman says these days in public has to be carefully thought out.I just find it very strange in over a week the lid is still nailed very firmly on this incident, knowing as you do the way news spreads like wildfire through the railway commumity.

Well that makes BarryM and me guilty of not checking down the site before reporting things like this. Though we each did it in different sections.

Tallington,
Thanks for the link and I must admit some of the reports on the RAIB web page make interesting reading. As others have said in this thread let's just wait and see what recommendations the RAIB come up with for this one before drawing judgement or conclusions. We all know the press are very guilty of blowing something up out of all proportion hence I very rarely pick a newspaper up these days. The RAIB go into the facts and get to the bottom of it, the only problem being is that it takes time (sometimes extrodinary amounts of time) and at the end of the day they can only come up with recommendations that have to be acted on by other bodies.

All exactly as per the old Railway Inspectorate reports, except for the wonderful Victorian preambles and the "I have the honour to remain, Sir, your obedient servant..." at the end. The reports themselves were usually little masterpieces too, beautifully written and models of conciseness. Sadly missed.
