One wonders whether London-based drivers for East Coast and Virgin Trains get used to accents north of the border.
They don't London Kings Cross drivers don't go past Newcastle and London Euston drivers don't go past Preston.

Going back to the fire, an email at work told that smoke was detected in the relay room at Three Bridges.
To a Cockney, Geordie can be just as impenetrable as Jock.
And for those of us in the middle, there's no hope at all.

Slave panels are only designed to control individual locking areas owing to data link failures where the signal box is unable to communicate with the localalised locking. They are usually manned by MOM's or LOM's, who do not necissarily have the right competency to be an actual signaller. They have to, at all times, work under the signallers direction from the controlling signal box/
Not sure how they managed at KX back in 2006, as we had a FCC service terminating and starting at Finsbury Park.

That is right as they only show the TDM areas and not the FDM areas. They also have no train discibers or SPT/CSR/GSMR and no direct communication to the neighbouring relay room of any format. All you've got is a direct line back to the controlling panel.

We used our slave panels when they commissioned the temporary panels for Panels 1A and 1B and again when the commissioned the new Panels 1A, 1C and 1B (from left to right in that order as you look at them) for the East London Line project. We had Selhurst, Norwood Junction, East Croydon and South Croydon slave panels in use at various times as the the new panels were commissioned.

In our case they were manned by signallers from the ASC who had been trained up to operate them.

What no one has said about yet though is if there was a fire at Three Bridges, and the amount of disruption that would have caused in comparison

I was told last night, by a guard, that Stalybridge SB 'conveniently' burnt down- about 4 months ago. A special meeting of RAIB (Railway Arson Involvement Branch) must have taken place!

We can't use our slave panels in their relay rooms if the ASC has been evacuated as the signaller needs to be at the panel directing all train movements via the telephone. Also as Three Bridges/Crawley/Balcombe Tunnel Junction are direct control from the main panel there is no slave panel for that area.
Hmmm, unless it's been returned the slave panel in Selhurst was away being rebuilt to reflect the recent alterations!

I hear that during the recent Kidderminster Box fire, Bewdley South picked up the phone and was told something along the lines of "The roof's on fire, bye!" before the signalman made a beeline for the door!
Some years ago one of the big signal boxes at Clapham Junction - on a gantry over the tracks - caught fire. The signallers only found out when another box phoned to tell them!

It's amazing what you find out. Now that makes me wonder how many of slave panels are correct after the recent alterations that we've had and are going to have to various layouts.

I'm not entirely sure what the recent alterations were, so I'm not sure if this pic is of the current layout.

Hello John, that is the old layout at Selhurst station, the crossover points are the other way round now. The reversal of the layout at Selhurst was the reason why Selhusrt slave panel was away ahem when the fire alarms went off.

Ah thanks, I noticed the crossings had been renewed, but didn't know the layout had been changed.

T1555 points were removed and replaced Thornton Heath side of T1554 points. T61 signal was also converted from an auto signal to a controlled signal and was also given a reduced overlap, as the full overlap when used would foul T1555 points in their new position.

Going waaaay off topic here, but in an emergency would a passenger train be permitted through Selhurst Depot via Gullet/Tennison Road and Selhurst Arr/Dep roads? Maybe under the same arrangements as Lovers Walk carriage road?

When I first went to Bridges the answer was yes and it was covered in our SBI, but not anymore and have been withdrawn. This took place when Selhurst depot was being adapted to look after the new 377s and 171s and Southerns own SBI for the Selhusrt Panel operator were withdrawn so NR had to follow and withdraw ours as well.
