Evening all, I have decided, after finishing my current KX timetable, to work on two timetables relating to the 2014 Glastonbury Festival: one will be the booked timetable with no alterations and the other will be semi-fictional (booked timetable + other trains from longer distances that don't run IRL). I will, of course, have to endeavour to ensure the extra trains fit in the platforms at Castle Cary but I don't expect any problems on this. At the moment, one idea I have in mind is that one of these fictional workings will, after arrival at Castle Cary, work as an ECS to Westbury to join a Cardiff Central - Portsmouth Harbour service. However if the ECS train arrived at Westbury ahead of the train it is due to join then would the earlier arriving train automatically assume the correct headcode? If that isn't a clear question then lets say that: Train 5Z01 arrives at Westbury where it is due to join 1Z01 and then act as the lead unit. 5Z01 arrives before 1Z01 and the join is performed. Would 5Z01 then automatically become 1Z01, thereby allowing 1Z01 to leave without obstruction? As a side thought it amazes me a bit that other TOCs don't spot the potential for passenger traffic during the Glastonbury Festival as well. I am thinking of the likes of CrossCountry Trains, for example: it would be interesting to see what might happen if they ran a train or two for the Festival by extending some of their trains that normally terminate at Bristol Temple Meads, thereby giving trains from Manchester to Castle Cary, calling at the usual stations until Bristol Temple Meads, then non-stop to Castle Cary: would be better than swapping a Class 220 / 221 for a Class 150 or a bus on arrival at Bristol TM IMO. No doubt there is a good reason why that doesn't happen but then again XC do run Manchester Picadilly to Newquay in the summer holiday season. Also a return train from Castle Cary to Manchester Pic could be done by an ECS working from Barton Hill WRD to Castle Cary. Anyway, food for thought there but if I was in charge of TT planning at XC I would think about tapping into the potential passenger traffic for that festival. In timetable terms, it doesn't matter which order trains arrive into a platform to join. As long as they are both in the correct platform and timetabled to join each other, then they will join regardless who is at the front or back. This is because delays could easily reverse the order that the trains arrive and so a situation where 5Z01 is delayed sufficiently so that it arrives after the main service would join correctly as well. Once they are joined, they are no longer separate trains. They are just one train and the whole train will be dealt with as 1z01 regardless which of the original trains is at the front. In essence 5Z01 will simply disappear after the join. Log in to reply |

As long as only one of the train has further activities then that will be the one to continue and the other train will cease to exist. Further activities in this context is either a Next working or more locations after the joining location - possibly divides too IIRC.

Basically, yes IF 5Z01's timetable ends in Westbury but 1Z01's has some following timing points. When both have following timing points, it seems the train that comes later prevails.

When I went to Glastonbury about six years ago (from Manchester) it took a fair bit of persuasion on my part to convince the people I travelled with that going by train with one change would be better than the cheaper direct coach. We changed at Bristol on the way there and Taunton on the way back, I think. Direct trains from further afield would be good for passengers, but would Castle Cary be able to handle them?
