I was quite bored, so I grabbed a large diagrammatic rail map of the UK (passenger only unfortunately, but from the rather good site http://projectmapping.org ), converted it to an image and using a rather crude method, painted where sims are available. I just thought it would be a cool visualisation - if ugly because it's made by me who is too lazy to learn to use a proper vector graphics editor and has no artistic talent in any way ;)

The detail is hard to make out in places (though I tried to make it correct at least), but that's not really the map's intention - it's more to show general areas when it can be really hard to visualise exactly where things are, the approximate sizes of sims, etc.

It's a pretty big image, so please do be patient when you click on it to load:

http://tim32.org/~muzer/SimSig-pax-map.png

I have attempted to include freight lines where feasible (despite them not being marked on the map) but didn't bother working out exactly which direction they should go in/how far they should go, so some of them might be rather wrong. Sorry about that if so.

If I've missed anything, please let me know.

Areas highlighted in that terrible red airbrush are donationware sims, and areas highlighted in that terrible yellow airbrush are paid for sims. I have tried to mark the limits of each sim to reasonable compromise accuracy, bearing in mind sometimes they vary greatly for the up and down lines.

I didn't quite know how to mark the weird situation with March/Manea in the Cambridge sim (seriously, what is that all about?), so just included it as part of Cambridge. There were a few similar bits of weirdness (eg the Alloa branch having an invisible automated part but technically fully simulated), so I also put those in the sim.

I have not included unreleased or in development sims, withdrawn old sims or withdrawn public beta sims. Whether or not the sims are free is based on current status, not past. Basically, only things you can go to the site right now and download are included, and only ones that are free through said method are marked as free.

Chaining compatibility was attempted to be illustrated. It goes as follows:

* Sims on both sides support chaining - chaining is possible - two green lines perpendicular(ish) to the track
* Sim on one side supports chaining but the other sim needs work to make it actually happen - one green line on the supported side, one orange line on the unsupported side
* Sim on both sides would need rewriting to support chaining - orange lines on both sides (don't think this is ever true?).
* Sim on one side supports chaining but the other sim hasn't even been released/developed (and might never be) - one green line on the supported side, one red line on the unreleased side
* Sim on one side would need rewriting to support chaining and the sim on the other side doesn't exist - no markings.
* I added a black line between Waterloo and Drain sims to make the fact that they are two completely unconnected sims clear.
* Sims that are subsets of other sims (Royston being a subset of Cambridge and Cowlairs being a subset of Central Scotland) - the boundary where the subset sim ends (but the superset sim continues) are marked with a light grey line and labelled.

I have not tested such chaining, and information about actual compatibility is often quite thin on the wiki, so I have used educated guesses where possible, including heavy use of the "Connect to external signalbox" dialogue (which is unavailable for me on paid sims since I haven't yet bought any - so it's even more of a guess here), and performed actual testing only when really unsure (and when sims were free). For example, the North London Line did not appear to want to chain correctly with King's Cross despite my best efforts, so I've left it off. I would love to be corrected on matters such as these, as getting the information on the Wiki somewhere would be really useful IMHO.

Finally, a weird moment at Carlisle claiming in the menus as being able to chain with an (obviously nonexistent) Kingmoor? Presumably there was never any serious thought that we'd ever have a depot/yard as a chainable playable sim... Or was there?

Apologies to Project Mapping if you don't like me butchering your map like this - let me know and I'll take it down. It's only intended as a little informal "look how big SimSig is" exercise rather than anything good/official/etc..

Marylebone and the NLL at Neasden. Also possibly Fenchurch Street and the NLL at Barking, with the added complication that the simulated areas are not only touching, but actually overlapping.

I did a similar thing by the way, although the map I've used as a template is a bit smaller in scale, so I didn't bother to include the boundaries between simulations.

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Ah, cheers for that, I'll add them when I get home (I'm at Swanage right now). Just after making it I realised I thought I had seen one before, but I couldn't find it. It was indeed yours. Yours IS much clearer and better looking

OK, done Barking (I'll upload it later tonight), thanks for that, but the NLL connection at Neasden isn't a direct fringe - there are a few signalboxes in between simulated by neither, so it was deliberately excluded.

Reuploaded with the Barking fix. I also checked a few other things that I thought I might have made a mistake on, but I hadn't.

What is it all about?

I didn't have access to the full information required to produce sims of March and the surrounding boxes (I forget exactly how many; four or five?). But I thought it would be nice if Cambridge could chain to Peterborough. So I put in enough of a simulation - and marked it as such - to allow trains to be run between the two.

Aah, thanks - that makes sense. I was more confused because it's barely mentioned in the manual at all (if I remember correctly).

Ah right, you said that you've only included officially available sims, whereas I was thinking of the beta version of the NLL published quite a while ago, which included the complete Dudding Hill Line right up to the West Hampstead fringe.

Ah, right, didn't realise the beta expanded the area. Is that (and a few other sims that once had newer betas maybe?) still being developed, or are those improvements lost to time?

Incidentally, a few minor corrections and improvements have been made - I went over some text (sim names/etc.) I had accidentally obscured, moved a few freight lines around that I had "drawn" in the wrong place, and added some more accurate chaining data for some of the paid sims.

I have the required information to create either a separate Kingmoor sim or as an add-on to the Carlisle sim, but there are two reasons this was never done (I'd actually forgotten I'd put the chain box into Carlisle).

1. Simsig doesn't currently support joins/ divides on the move which would be neccesary for the hump shunting
2. I'm busy working on other sim related projects.

A sim covering Kingmoor? That'd be very interesting if the technology (and of course time) becomes available.

Indeed. I was intrigued when I saw it. Shame it didn't come to anything, but fair enough if SimSig can't handle it and you're too busy. Maybe for the future if circumstances change.

Update: I'd missed the Wimbledon-West Croydon line from the Victoria Central sim (1990s only, of course).
