So GOVIA have won the TSGN management contract, so is this the end of the Class 442 fleet or will they be redeployed? I quite like them on the Eastbourne to London Bridge and back rush hour turns.

Looks clear their relatively short life on GatEx services will be ending but could it be possible (or how easy and expensive is it) to convert them for use on the newly electrified overhead wire routes in the north?

Technically GatEx ended before the 442s transferred over to Southern.

Also, I can't see them being suitable up here unless they have better acceleration, I recall them occasionally being substituted for a 377 and they lost time due to their lack of acceleration, though AC might give them a bit more oomph, maybe there's a longer run they'd be happy on, but they're useless as a frequently stopping commuter train. Also, don't they have guage issues?

Here's a wacky idea: why not let SWT have them back for a song (SWT love a bargain and they'll be as cheap as chips 'cos no-one else will want them) and deploy them on the Weymouths, thus releasing 444s for the Pompeys, thus releasing some 450s for outer-suburban stuff and Guildford-Ascots. Just a thought

We had this dicussion before. Gatwick Express is a trading name of Southern; or as the TSGN ITT put it:

I far as I'm aware Gatwick Express although part of GOVIA's Southern franchise still operates as a separate entity, it certainly has it own drivers link, branding and ticket restrictions. The amount of times we have late running and we are left waiting for the Southern driver to work the rush hour service beyond Gatwick to Brighton is certainly to not a rare event nor is it when the return ECS come back to up from Brighton and we are left waiting crew relief at Gatwick as well.

Not quite, Gatwick Express is only a brand of Southern, the trading name for Southern Railway Limited....

I'm unsure on whether that the 442 drivers only sign those units, or whether there are people that drive other Southern units that occasionally run the 442s, branding has changed a lot, there's no more 'Gatwick' on the side of the units, and I think only the conductors have GX uniforms, drivers and catering staff have Southern uniforms.

Ticketing restrictions are a bit of an interesting one, Southern have always issued 'goodwill gestures' to people charged excesses for using 'SOUTHERN ONLY' tickets.

Drivers wear GatEx uniforms on GatEx services. 442s on other services (I would imagine) are driven by drivers and worked-on by guards in Southern uniforms. Whether these are the same people that normally wear GatEx uniforms on GatEx services, I really wouldn’t know.

I am not sure what you mean by ‘catering staff’ as the buffets have been removed for quite some time now.

Fair enough. B) I am not sure when they were removed. Definitely after the 442s had been on the Gatwick services for a time, but it is certainly years since they were removed. (According to Wikipedia this started around 2008, so actually not as long after they moved as I originally thought.)
