Saw this in The Sun this morning... Their photo to accompany the story was an oversized Thomas the Tank Engine making the Fat Controller look thin lol

Before we start feeling too smug, it's worth pointing out that NR is about to spend a fortune altering the Great Western so that the new IEP will fit. This is despite everyone telling the DfT (who ultimately ordered and micro-specified the thing) that it wouldn't fit.

They're not the only ones. I've been reading about the BR Modernisation Plan and when some of the diesel classes were introduced (notably the Deltics) there were instances of them approaching the platform ramps and knocking chunks off as they ran in, due to 'out of gauge' problems. Not quite as extreme as the French problem, but a start. Mal.

When LUL's Central Line was upgraded, all kinds of modifications were needed to tunnels, platforms etc. as the 1992 Tube Stock didn't quite fit. There have been a couple of other examples but as one is a little too recent, and I like my job, I shall remain silent on that :whistle:

There have also been instances when new stock was designed to be too big for the existing clearances because they were planned (from the start of the project) to be altered as part of the overall scheme. That didn't stop the Evening Standard screaming headlines about trains that wouldn't fit the tunnels

Yes, and even the prototype Deltic managed to send a few platform edging slabs airborne during its brief career! Oh, and apparently on one occasion she lost her cab steps at Newcastle Manors during an altercation with the platform edge!

Well, since you mentioned prototype Deltic... :whistle: Doing a little PR: I feel the need to point out it is currently on display at Ribble Steam Railway & Museum, not far from its place of manufacture. Fortunately for us, the big blue one is now forecast to be with us on loan until October 2015; in great appearance without any obvious sign of Unplanned Kinetic Interfaces during its former career. Sadly there is NO cab access, so you'd have to admire from ground level. If you want museum access only, without train rides; there is a discounted £2 admission - not that anyone here would pass up the chance for a few miles of steam haulage!
