I've only really heard of them being used where propelling movements are likely - usually terminal stations.

Carlisle station has them, as does the lickey incline (to allow the banker to see the aspect), York used to have them before it was resignalled. Doncaster also has a few in the station area.

Also, I think down main (P2) at slough. Signal didn't return to danger until rear power car (2+8) had passed the junction.

Loads everywhere. Shunt signals quite often, both modern and old. Also a rash of delayed replacement controls in the late 1990s which had nothing to do with propelling and everything to do with bodging TPWS controls so occupying the first track beyond the signal and replacing it to red before the TPWS sensor on the train had gone over it, and causing a false activation would not happen.
