Remember British Rail anyone? What a sad state of affairs. Industries, utilities, rail freight companies all sacrificed on the altar of globalisation and the EU. Now it’s Chiltern Railways turn. Is there no end to this madness? Are there no politicians out there that care for British businesses and jobs?

Can't help felling that it's an area we're best keeping clear of in the future too. DB also now own EWS, and I believe are looking to run international freight and passenger services on HS1 once that's opened up to all in the near future. NedRail operate the Northern and Merseyrail Franchises, and don't forget that First is a Canadian, not a British Company and they operate lots of services in the UK. This internationalisation of the franchises is good - Chiltern, Northern and Merseyrail have become parts (distant, but still parts) of the respective country's nationalised railways. So while to UK eyes they're privatised, they are in fact nationalised with someone else's government. No profiteering or shareholders to satisfy so the operators can concentrate reinvestment and providing a decent service. Surely that's a good thing, whomever is doing it. Log in to reply |

Good points James, although franchises run by someone else's government will still be looking to make a profit - the social/service motive won't be the prime driver as it might/should in the home country, as they can't justify subsidising our own railways in the same way as they could/should their own!

Mind my words... Northern will be re-branded in Abellio and the Dutch Fish-hook logo will apear on the trains soon.
