Have installed Fireftp for Firefox but I can't seem to access my site on ntlworld.com. What I have is the host name "upload.ntlworld.com" and that seems to be OK as if I change that I get an error. "Unable to make a connection. Please try again." I have my user name and password in the appropriate boxes and press connect and get: 220- 220-################################################################## 220- 220- Welcome to upload.ntlworld.com 220- 220-################################################################## 220- 220 upload.ntlworld.com FTP server ready USER Peter-bennet 331 Password required for Peter-bennet. PASS (password not shown) Which looks like a sucess but most of the controls are greyed out and I can't see any of my site stuff etc. What I have then found is that if I corrupt my user name or password and try I get the same message- in otherwords it does not seem to have actually connected albeit it seems that it has- or it's connected to something else. I have Terrapin ftp too and I have got that to work, also I've spoken to NTL and they can't find anything wrong their end. Terrapin uses a slightly different server access wording but that is rejected via Fire. I have found in the help that there are issues with VISTA but I'm currently on my Win2000 machine and it's still not working. Anyone assist? Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Peter When I use FireFTP I get this dialogue when I connect. 331 Password required for XXXXXXXXX PASS (password not shown) 230 User XXXXXXXXX logged in FEAT 211-Features: MDTM MFMT MFF modify;UNIX.group;UNIX.mode; MLST modify*;perm*;size*;type*;unique*;UNIX.group*;UNIX.mode*;UNIX.owner*; REST STREAM SIZE 211 End PWD 257 "/" is the current directory TYPE A 200 Type set to A PASV 227 Entering Passive Mode (82,165,210,63,221,31). LIST -al 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for file list 226 Transfer complete There is one possibility - if you click on the "edit" button beside the connection name in the FireFTP header and go to the Connection tab, the Passive mode box is checked and the security mode is "None". There is also a port to set; is this the same port number as ntlworld advise? Can you use a "plain" line text FTP program to connect and see what happen in this case? (if I remember correctly, if you are using MS windows, you can access it, by invoking a command windows and typing there ftp followed by the name of the host you want to be connected). I do not know Fireftp, so I can not give you any specific comment, but it is a little bit strange the the site works with one program and does not work with another program. Log in to reply |

John, Mine is set up as yours, changing port to one I know (50505) results in a connection failure- so I assume 21 is working. Anyfile, Using the CMD results in a "Connect : connection timed out". Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Peter Another couple of random thoughts: 1) Was it an ntl problem which has now been resolved? I have just used the command line option for ftp upload.ntlworld.com and got "connected to upload.ntlworld.com" followed immediately by "connection closed by remote host". 2) You can check whether it is your Firefox set-up by using Filezilla FTP client (free download at http://filezilla-project.org/ ). I don't know about the under-the-bonnet stuff, but the interface looks very like the FireFTP view; given the source of the Filezilla program, I would take a guess that the underlying software is related. I'm wondering if its a port issue, in that I've since downloaded several different ftp trial programs and all seem to fail- except Terrapin for some reason. I can see why that might be an issue on my laptop which goes through my router etc but I've never had to fiddle with ports on my DT before. I've tried opening the port 21 on my lap-top and taking down my firewall temporarily still to no avail. Can't now remember why I wanted to access my web-site now anyway..... Peter, Could the problem be related to where you are connecting from? I've seen this before with one of my clients: basically ntlworld will only accept connections from valid (i.e. NTL broadband-subscribed) telephone numbers. In the case of the client concerned, NTL had the wrong number in their database (primary incoming telephone line rather than broadband line). As a consequence, once that had been fixed, all upload work that I was doing on their website had to be done from their office. Regards, Nick Log in to reply |

If I try to connect using a "plain" (command line) client, I got a disconnection with this error: 421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection and I have to say I am NOT connecting from inside their network. My opinion is that if you can not connect (and log in) with the command line client, then the problem may (and should) be with the connection and not with the program. Just I can not understand how Terrapin could connect if the plain command line could not. One of the reason could be that Terrapin retry many times until it success in connection. Do you have any log from Terrapin or can you have some more informations about what happens when you connect with Terrapin? Log in to reply |
