Good ITN report. It wasn't until I saw the news of this accident that I realised that Stobart's had a rail freight operation. It's been going since 2006 apparently. Well done Eddie for getting freight of the roads and onto the rails. I hope this mishap will not have put the company off using rail in future. Despite what happened rail has got to be safer and better for the environment than more on more lorries on our roads.

I get the updates sent to my email so as Soon as a bulletin or report is issued I know about it. Some incidents aren't widely reported in the press or bush telegraph so it's often the only way I find out about them. I find them useful for improving my own rail knowledge. Those who merely play SIMSIG as opposed to working in the industry may find them useful for instances of degraded working which is where most accidents seem to occur.

Ken, Thanks for the info and posting on this. Once again interesting reading and I see those famous three words are used yet again and they always appear in the recommendations section. "If reasonably practicable". What price safety. Geoff Log in to reply |

The usual answer to 'what price safety' is £700k per death of people sat in cars/buses etc and around £3m if they are sat in a train. I can't recall the value for an aircraft passenger. In all cases, consider what else you could do with the money. regards Bill Log in to reply |

In terms of the reccomendations to the wagons for example keep in mind they are already over 40 years old - shrouding on top vents and override protection has been provided on new wagons for sevaral years, but I'm not convinced that any major rebuild is "reasonably practicable" when (you would hope) the owners/operators would be starting to think about replacement strategies for them. Note that "reasonably practicable" only applies to two of the twelve reccomendations though, and neither of them are relating directly to how the accident was caused (the bridge collapsing), but rather at different uses of track recording data, end protection on tanks (which the report says would have been irrelevant in this case anyhow) and top protection on tanks (which only failed on one of the tanks) Log in to reply |

Interesting. I wonder why the report did not recommend prohibiting platform sharing when low adhesion might be present? It isn’t even mentioned and then dismissed for any reason. Perhaps it just isn’t a possibility. Anybody know?
