BNS Platform 2 length 11/09/2014 at 20:05 #64524

Hello,

The reference guide for New St platform lengths says that platform 2A is 142m and 2B is 164m.

However I've noticed that when a 9 car pendolino, for example, which is 217m that approaches from up stour has stopped at platform 2, it only occupies the track circuit for platform 2A.

Is this right and I'm missing something, or is perhaps the length wrong in the sim? I think this may also happen with platform 1 but I can't remember atm.

Thanks

I just checked against the scheme plans again. The TCs - in platform 2 at least - match the scheme plan. It's possible the source of the reference guide lists practical lengths as opposed to physical lengths.

I pulled together the platform length chart shown in the Wiki. I've checked and the platform 2 lengths match those listed in the Timetable Planning Rules 2014 document. It seems likely that there is indeed a discrepancy between actual lengths and the published practical lengths.

I don't want to be a pedant here, but BNS is the code for Barnes (Waterloo Sim) and Birmingham New Street is BHM!

Just thought this would help avoid any potential confusion.

Thanks for checking. There may well be a discrepancy for whatever intended reason, but I know for a fact in reality a pendolino would extend through the whole if not most of platform 2, it wouldn't fit into 2a alone. So how can this be the case in the sim?

Also apologies for the bhm/bns, it annoys me too and then I do it myself

Could be something to do with SimSig stopping points not taking into account stop markers / signal sighting / CCTV monitors.

In the real world drivers may be required to position themselves slightly differently according to local conditions.

Jamie.
I wondered how long it would take some smart alec to come along and point this out.

I can be pedantic as the best of them but this annoys the heck out of me. What do CRS codes have to do with SimSig? We are not booking tickets or seat reservations nor do we all keep a list of CRS codes in our anorak pockets. To most SimSig users BNS means Birmingham New Street.

When there is a sim titled "Barnes" that is when potential confusion may occur.

A. Few people use or know CRS codes
B. It's obvious the OP is talking about Birmingham New Street.

Again, the TC lengths in SimSig come from scaled scheme plans so they're going to be pretty much correct. If somebody knows stopping points then I'm all ears.

Tbf Geoff and sloppyjag have a point, it is obvious BNS means Birmingham New St, especially when I'm posting in the Birmingham New St sim thread

I appreciate the TC lengths come from the plans, so that's fair enough. The stopping point on platform 2 in reality is only a few metres in front of the signal, so the train when stopped there extends well beyond the middle signals and along the whole of the platform, so I was wondering why in the sim the TC for platform 2B is not occupied. Incidentally, when the train approaches from the other direction this is not the case as both 2A and 2B TCs remain occupied.

I'm guessing because the TC in 2B is shorter in the sim, so even though the train pulls up to the signal at the end (or the stopping point if different) its length means it's whole length still can't fit in 2B on its own. I agree that something is a miss in the plans for a pendo not to fill 2a and 2b in the up direction

Sorry if I'm asking and already answered question, but has the sim lengths been checked for TC 2A!

Surely something is amiss here if a 217m train occupies a 142m TC.

That's 75m of missing train??

Can I also ask Mr Mystery if the length of the train is actually correct. I say this because I've seen train whose description sez HST and find in the timetable setup, they're clicked DMU A.

Yes, mentioned several times in earlier posts.

Yet again I've pulled the plans out and have finally noticed a discrepancy. First I thought to check on Google Earth (around 315m vs sim 430m) so that made me suspicious. Then I used a few other reference points on the plan, different from what had been used before, and came up with very different figures depending on which point pairs I used (points as in dimensioned places, as opposed to switches/crossings/pointwork). However, comparing the sim to the visible parts on Google Earth (station throat areas) I get roundly similar figures. I therefore conclude that the scheme plan is only to scale in certain places - or changes scale and is missing scale change markers (wouldn't be the first scheme plan to do so, and it won't be the last).

So, apologies for the confusion but scheme plans are usually correct..... and I've never caught a Pendolino from platform 2; more usually a Voyager from platform 9.

Hi, yeah it's right, I checked in the train characteristics window.

So Geoff, is the length in the sim wrong if it's based on the wrong scaled part of the plans? Sorry for making you check up things again. And for some reason I always seem to be down on platform 2, more so than any other!

Hi Geoff,

I'm a former platform supervisor at BHM, armed with both my experience and a sectional appendix. If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to contact me either in the forum or by PM.
