Maybe a silly question, but, I have been looking at the current timetable for Waterloo workings. There is a service 3J95 that leaves Waterloo at 08:37 in a morning and goes empty to Hampton Court. It then runs empty back to Raynes Park as 3J92 with a 09:07 departure and then eventually when it gets to Raynes Park forms 2J92 into Waterloo. Maybe I am getting the head code 3*** wrong which I thought was for fast empty coaching stock. May be obvious to some of you on here, but why does this go all the way to Hampton Court, back to Raynes Park before it starts what appears to be a revenue earning service. Is there a perfectly good reason for this. I seem to remember a few years back that at Kings Cross they had a similar out and back coaching stock without earning any revenue (which I think was an HST) purely and simply to free up platform space. Any ideas? Geoff Log in to reply |

Have only had a quick look at Wimbledon / Feltham sims, but as it's in the peak time, Hampton Court may be the only available location for a reversal to take place without disrupting the other services in order for it to start it londonbound service from raynes park. Looking at Raynes Park itself, it has no connections from countrybound to londonbound platforms. Yes you are correct that 3xxx are generally fast ECS and suggest that it does run empty countrybound because at that time in the morning the majority of commuters are heading into rather than out of London. Whilst at Hampton Ct Jn SB (not NR, but in the shadow of the flyover at HCJn), I've noticed up trains passing outwith the usual Hampton Ct shuttles at xx:28 and :58. I think the branch is used as a convenient turn-back siding from Surbiton without getting in the way of a very intensive AM peak WTT.

I did notice from Real Time Trains that when it ran today it was reported 15 minutes late arriving at Hampton Court and 8 minutes late working back. If it is just run this route to turn back and get it out of the way then this must have somewhat defeated the object I would have thought. Not being a timetable writer I would have thought the unit could be more gainfully employed but there again what do I know..... Geoff. Log in to reply |

It may also be that the actual demand for an extra outbound train is so low that the additional expense wouldn't be worth it - although being the Southern Region, I'm not sure that the "fuel bill" would be any higher on a stopping train, if they even get billed for such things at all! Hampton Ct only uses 1 platform for the service, so a useful place for ECS to wait with some recovery time may be the reason.
