Multiplayer bugs 19/04/2015 at 17:50 #71235

Hi all,

Today I ran a multiplayer of Saltley chained to New St & Derby for a forum that I'm a part of.

After a relatively smooth start, a load of bugs were noticed, mainly once the host for New Street's internet had died, thus the sim cutting off.

- Trains waiting at St Andrews Jcn not showing on the New Street sim
- Train 5N04 randomly appeared at around 06:30 at Kings Norton with a timetable showing as departing Longbridge at 17:22 before dissapearing (noted the dissapearance to an unusually large amount of trains being removed from the sim?)
- For about 15 minutes signal 204 would not route onto the Derby lines into New Street. The track circuits would show up as white however the signal would stay at danger (the signal was as it is when there is no route set from it, and the route would not cancel)
- Centre Panel calls were being directed through to the host and not to the client who had control of the Centre panel.
- Redditch would show as occupied after 2R08 left the branch, however this was fixed after the train after left the branch (entered through SPADding the train out of Barnt Green)
- Signal NS1133 (not in the Saltley area) was held at the red aspect with the centre panel recieving calls wanting to SPAD past said signal. No issue was showing in the Incident Control Panel or the Incident Report.

Any help on these bugs would be appreciated.

After a relatively smooth start, a load of bugs were noticed, mainly once the host for New Street's internet had died, thus the sim cutting off.

1) Trains waiting at St Andrews Jcn not showing on the New Street sim
2) Train 5N04 randomly appeared at around 06:30 at Kings Norton with a timetable showing as departing Longbridge at 17:22 before dissapearing (noted the dissapearance to an unusually large amount of trains being removed from the sim?)
3) For about 15 minutes signal 204 would not route onto the Derby lines into New Street. The track circuits would show up as white however the signal would stay at danger (the signal was as it is when there is no route set from it, and the route would not cancel)
4) Centre Panel calls were being directed through to the host and not to the client who had control of the Centre panel.
5) Redditch would show as occupied after 2R08 left the branch, however this was fixed after the train after left the branch (entered through SPADding the train out of Barnt Green)
6) Signal NS1133 (not in the Saltley area) was held at the red aspect with the centre panel recieving calls wanting to SPAD past said signal. No issue was showing in the Incident Control Panel or the Incident Report.

Tom,

1) Isn't this an exit point?
2) Not sure
3) Could it have been the overlaps?
4) Had they definitely taken control, if so, was the train not yet completely in the area (ie not yet reached the first signal?)
5) Were there two trains on the branch?
6) The sim may be unsure as to what is chained and what isn't, if the internet dies.

The bottom line: Chaining for so few people wasn't going to end well, and George's internet is rubbish.

Hope this helps some issues.

It sounds like these "bugs" were actually your internet problems, rather than bugs. If the sims can't communicate then yes, things will get into inconsistent states. There's not a lot SimSig can do about an internet connection dropping!

However:

More information needed. Where are you expecting to see the train - F2 train list (it won't because it's not yet entered the New Street sim), simplifier, TD maps above, TD approach berth... and which direction?

So the disappearance is user action, so we can disregard that. What does the timetable display for that train?

Again, probably your internet problems.

I assume you're talking New Street sim here - the one with the internet problems? Guess what.

Check the train list. Was this because one of the trains removed was on the branch, so the exit sequence never got triggered?

This is a dummy signal only used in standalone mode, approaching Landor Street from New Street. If a train was here then you were not chained at this point.

I don't see any bugs here. What I do see is internet problems and trains being removed. If you do get problems with servers dropping, it is best to go back to a previous save. While SimSig does try to recover, there are certain sequences that require back and forth messages between sims in order for things to happen correctly. If messages get lost during that sequence - or one sim thinks it's chained while the other has quietly died - then problems will occur.
