Hi all. Having been doing some more work on a 1973 timetable for carlisle I've come across RWS (registered wagon service) trains and some freights marked Merchandise. Joe I'd say those 2 terms you quote in later years became what we knew as speedlink traffic, where a variety of freight was conveyed in wagon loads as oposed to block trains such as MGR & block oil trains. prior to Speedlink these trains were termed as ABS (Air Braked Service). But back in the 1970s they were known as merchandise.

Funnily enough, the meaning of "Registered Wagon Service" came up on another rail forum I read the other week. It's basically the registered freight service that the LNER marketed as "Green Arrow", wagonload traffic that was supposed to receive expedited service and have its location monitored; it eventually was replaced by Speedlink.
