PTC is somewhere between ERTMS level 1 and level 2. However, unlike ERTMS which is installed in numerous countries around the world on something like 90,000km of track so far and is generally compatible worldwide, PTC is a purely US system which leaves its design and implementation up to each individual railroad. That means PTC is being re-invented umpteen times over in the US, and locomotives from one railroad will not "work" on adjacent railroads unless they are dual fitted because the various implementations of PTC are incompatible with each other. Some RRs have grouped together - in the west BNSF and UP dominate, so it made sense for them to join together to create a compatible system so their locos can run on each others metals (as they normally do every day of the week). An excellent exercise in how to re-invent something badly while paying lots of money. :doh SimSig Boss Log in to reply |
