A false alarm triggered an evacuation of Melbourne's train control centre that halted all trains across the city on Thursday morning. The rail shutdown angered many commuters, who were stranded in their thousands for more than 45 minutes while the city's rail network creaked back to life. Trains, which have now resumed normal running, were ordered to stop running at 8.26am. They did not resume running for at least 30 minutes, with huge flow-on impacts to the rail network, including causing Monash University to push back its exam starting times. A fire brigade officer who attended the scene at the Metrol train control centre in Collins Street said an evacuation alarm for the entire office building had gone off. The checks meant to ensure Metrol remained at least partially staffed in the event of a false alarm failed, and all staff meant to be controlling trains flooded from their level-five location into the street. But a fire brigade officer said the internal communications system that was meant to stop just such an evacuation in the event of a false alarm had broken down. A senior train driver with many years' experience said the last time Metrol had been evacuated, "the smoke alarms went off because someone overcooked something in the microwave". He said when there was a smoke alarm at Metrol, "by default they bring everything to the stop position, and once they shut down everything reverts to stop". Article Log in to reply |
