I recently downloaded and installed a group of timetables from Steamer in the intention of trying them out.

I've got the latest versions of Bristol and Swindon A+B and the latest loader to the best of my knowledge however when I try to chain Bristol to Swindon A+B, it connects then goes ape with various faults.

One error message says Swindon A & B IECC SimSig: Bristol chaining arrangements inconsistent while the other says Swindon A & B IECC SimSig: Recusive bug report: Exception in HandleMessage XLTB827,0 (EStringListError: List index out of bounds (2))

Now I have no idea what that means but all I did was start both sims as a server as I wanted to chain them together on the laptop doing it the exact same way I managed to chain Coventry and Leamington Spa successfully last night.

Anyone able to translate what this error messages mean?

I would be very grateful as I would like to do a GW chain sometime.

Did you try running any trains through the Bristol / Swindon fringes?

I know that some sims did at one point come up with errors but still work

Basically, the chaining arrangements between the two simulations are inconsistent- this is to be expected as SwinDid is on the Loader and Bristol is one of the oldest .exe simulations still in use. This is a simulation issue, the timetable makes no difference.

However, I'm fairly sure others have been able to chain them. I've just tested it with the midnight start, and 1B94 correctly transfers from SwinDid to Bristol.

Just playing around with it now. They do chain, got trains running between the two now/

The way chaining is coded has chaged since Bristol was last released and the current loader sims. As such while they'll probably connect and might even send trains to each other in the strictest sense they're not compatible - I think it tends to work if you don't use the BiDi between Thingley / Bathampton and Hullavington / Chipping Sodbury, and if there are no trains in those sections when you disconnect the two sims, but its a proverbial pain in the backside.

True compatibility will have to wait for whenever Bristol is refurbished to loader spec.

That's probably why then, it will chain but refuses to let me run a chained session.

Pity

In what way does it refuse to run a chained session.

Bearing in mind what JamesN has said, I have run quite a few chain games with Bristol and the loader sims around it and don't have any issues.

Cancel off all the warnings and it should be fine.

One error message says Swindon A & B IECC SimSig: Bristol chaining arrangements inconsistent
That means that one of the two sims is expecting the other to provide some facility to do with chaining, but the other is saying that it doesn't provide it. Depending on what's missing, chaining might work reasonably well, might work sometimes, or might break. Close the message and try it out.

(I'm guessing that, in this case, Swindon has been written to chain to a new version of Bristol that hasn't been released and might not even have been written.)

That's a much more serious matter; it indicates a bug in the loader. Are you able to reproduce it? (I can see it's caused by the chaining.) If so, please say how.

Not so. While new facilities have been added, it's perfectly possible to write a loader sim that will chain to Bristol without complaint. It's nothing to do with exe v loader.

What it looks like is that Swindon has been coded with new detail in the overlap area the present Bristol doesn't have in it. When that new detail is added to Bristol (which will mean it becomes a loader sim) then the warning will go away.

I borrowed the Bristol Sim data from Kurt some years ago (pre loader I think) and made it work, so it should work out of the box as and when Bristol is re-released. I have no idea when (or if) that will happen.

Just found a zip "Bristol Chain fix" dated 20/12/2009. And before anyone asks - it's not in loader format so can't easily be built as a temporary release even if Geoff were so minded.
