This timetable has been completely re-written over the last 6 weeks & is probably now much more accurate than the version you are playing. As now we've got the 1981 Preston Division Trip Notice & also some info from the 1978 Preston Division Trip Notice, so all the local Trip services have been re-worked plus I managed to obtain a copy of the May 1979- May 1980 LMR Passenger Train Marshaling Notice which gives details of all the loco hauled pasenger trains & postal services on the LMR for the period the timetable covers, so in effect they too will be 100% accurate. Next week when Postal returns from holiday he will be re-working all the shunt movements throughout the 24 hours for the 3 station pilots as I e-mail him the formations of all the loco hauled trains that detach & join at Carlisle from that book. The sim now runs on the V4 Loader format thanks to Tom although some issues needs resolving that the re-worked 1979-1980 timetable threw up. However when this timetable is re-released on the loader version of the sim you'll no doubt notice a vast difference in the timetable & a myriad of movements that you won't see in the original version of te timetable due to the fact that we didn't have all the publications we now have. Plus the timetable has been extended to Lockerbie as it will be chainable with a 1979-1980 Motherwell timetable when I get that finished. Hopefully the waiting will soon be over to all those who have been waiting for this to be re-released.

I can confirm that in the next release of this timetable on the V4 loader format trip services to both Dentonholme Yard & the Electricty Works have been added. Also there's a Tuesdays Only trip service that runs from Currock C&W to Shap Summit for the testing of coaching stock & wagons off repairs at Currock which involves a run round in the Down Loop at Shap for the return working. There are a couple of trip services off the S&C with local trips from Skipton/Hellfield areas & some trip workings from Workington towards Kingmoor Yard. The workings to & from petteril bridge Sdgs have been done along with an additional trip to & from Cowans Sheldon sdgs, plus aome shunts to & from Kingmoor Depot with loco stores vans etc. Can't remember off the top of my head exactly, but whatever was in the 1981 Preston division Trip Notice has been added & all the trip services in the current version of the tt have been withdrawn as they were based on the 1988 & 1991 Trip Notice as that was all we had when the tt was originally written. The trip services to & from Dentonholme Yard & the Electrcity Works were taken from the 1978 Preston Division Trip Notice. Also in the 1981 Trip Notice was a Trip Service from dumfries worked by a Cl.27 loco which has been added into the tt as it was listed as trip Services from other Divisions that enter the Preston Division. All the overnight sleeper & Motorail services along with all the loco hauled passenger workings have been modified to be exactly as the LMR Passenger Train marshalling Circular shows for that period. Some of the trains are very long with some having approx. 7 coacjes plus 12 carflats on them. The bottleneck that you currently get around Upperby in the mornig no longer exists & is much more workable so John tells me as hr has been testing the timetable. Plus as there is now a 'STEAM' category in the train types there are 2 steam spcials that work over the S&C taken from a late 1970s Special traffic Notice, one with Flying Scotsman 4472 & the other with Union of South Africa IIRC.

Sounds like so much research and study has gone in... Delighted to hear it'll be even more accurate and detailed than it is now.

Can't wait, but I'll refrain from asking when the timetable (and the sim) will land ;)

Thanks for the info Pascal - it sounds like Carlisle was a fascinating area of the railway then.

I can say roughly that that the timetable should be finished within about 3 weeks from now hopefully. John won't be back for another week hence I'm tidying up on items that have been in the 'To Do' box for some time until he returns then I shall continue with Carlisle 79-80 tt. With regards to the sim being ready for release then thats down to Tom. he's still got to resolve a few issues that have cropped up with the new tt tests.
Carlisle was amjor centre for rail traffic on the BR network & don't forget Kingmoor marshaling yard was the biggest on the BR network. Obviously today it is a shadow of its former size. In the 1980s Kingmoor was a major Speedlink hub for freight traffic, although not much in the way of MGR traffic ran through Carlisle. Also there was a number of freight services that avoided Carlisle station area & diverted away from Citadel station as they went towards Workington steel works. During the period of the 79-80 timetable the majority of Cl.7 freights ran via the S&C instead of running south towards Carnforth along the WCML as that was used mainly by passenger services & Cl.4 freights & some Cl.6 freights. What tends to set the 1979-1980 timetable apart from the rest is that in the May 1979-May 1980 A&D book I have it was originally issued to signaler W.J. Taylor as his name is written on the cover & he has written in biro in the book all the arrival & departure times & platforming of all the diverted ECML traffic due to the Penmanshiel tunnel collapse, this in turn makes it exetremly difficult to create in the Motherwell 1979-1980 tt which will chain to Carlisle as I don't have any other info on these diverted trains. Tom told me he created the sim in this signalers honour as he was the signalman on duty on the Centre panel the night a freightliner train ran away of the freight avoiding line & could have resulted in a serious collision had it not been for Mr. Taylor's actions when this incident occurred so it made sense to do the timetable using his book & his notes. Thats how this timetable came about. Some people think its the best timetable yet created on SimSig, but I hope when the new version is released its alot more accurate or as accurate as we can make it without actually having someone to talk to who was there at that time. My main aim when writing timetables is to make them as accurate as I can & if I'm struggling to find something out then I use my own railway experience & that of people I know who work or worked on the railways to tell me ther thoughts & then I 'best guess' it. I'm not into ficticious tt's.
At this precise moment in time the 1979-1980 tt has 1137 trains in it, but don't forget the station shunts for the 3 station pilots are all to be re-written so that may well increase or decrease slightly. That's about as much as I can tell you for now. I'm sure the waiting will be worth it & the issue at Wigton has been resolved.

Standard Motorail formation when I was at Kensington (signalman summer '79, then summer supervisor summer '81) was 8 coaches (Mk 1s) + 12 carflats, so when they were split for loading/unloading there were 10 vehicles in each bay.

I was thinking the other day - was this the first stretch of line equipped with 25kV OHLE to close?

Lancaster Green Ayre to Morecambe was a 25Kv test track if my memory is working correctly. That closed in 1966 which beats the Carlisle Avoider by a few years.
