Hello all. I was working that day at TBASC, when the shadow service ran for a couple of hours. Total chaos, more trains than track to run them on. Something I think we are going to have to get used to. The turn back siding was brought into use at West Croydon on the afternoon of Wednesday 31st March, with some restrictions. S&T for the project signed it over at Sunday 27th March at about 05:00hrs. The 1st train to use it went in there about 13:20ish on the 31st but I forget the ID of the train. At the same time a traction return fault occurred preventing the use of T1048 shunt signal, gain one loose one lol. Darren Log in to reply |

Hi Darren, Why is the exit signal from the turnback a normal signal and not a ground position light ? As you round the curve from Waddon on a single yellow by the tram bridge to enter West Croydon you get a moment of panic as the red at the end of the turnback comes into view. It will take a while to realise that this signal is for the turnback and not the running line! Seems a strange way of doing things! Tony PS Does the green aspect actually work on T71 at East Croydon - haven't seen it for nearly a year, the damn thing is ALWAYS red (well, occaisionally single yellow ) Log in to reply |

Hello Tony, I take it when your approaching T71 your on a down 1CXX. if that is the case then this might explain. Since Southern changed their timetable all the offpeak up East Grinsteads 2LXX cross over platform 4 to Fast Reversible in front of the Down 1CXXs. There is not enough overlap on your next signal T95, so we have to set the route T71 to T95 in reduced overlap ROL, which means that T71 becomes approach controlled. As for the new T34 becoming a normal signal, not got a clue, but it's just like T10 on the Norwood Folk Arrival Road and T18 on the Gullet, and it works the same way as well when we set it. Set main aspect to main aspect but only sets a ROL. Darren Log in to reply |

Darren, Yeh, have notice the up Grinnys crossing in fromt - we usually pick up 2 yellows at Thornton Heath. If on a 2CXX then we always sit at T71 waiting for the usually late Worst Capital Connect to come from the Down London Bridge fast in front of us.... I don;t know who decided on T34 but it doesn't seem to be 'best working practice' to use their usual term ! Tony Log in to reply |

Oh, wasn't sure it was in use - it has a sleeper laid across the small headshunt and in the siding near the 4 car stop mark with STOP boards on top... Worst Capital Connect strikes again today - one failed at Sutton and left me sitting outside for 25 minutes... grrr... Tony Log in to reply |

Hello Tony That would be part of the restrictions they brought in, to get the siding up and running, only trains of no more than 4 coaches, can use it, and they have to be LOROL training trips. I believe the buffer stops are not off the correct type, to prevent a run away ending up on the Up or Down Wallington lines, should it ever happen. dabbadaz Log in to reply |

Blimey, if thats the case we'll not have many walking routes left - Loads of them have no physical separation from running lines!!! I mean as drivers we are trained to walk next to the line - what is the problem ? Tony Log in to reply |

I've seen an S&T guy turn up on his own at a single-gantry dropper type signal thing (i.e: it's one signal above the down running line in a two track area, there's a large square base thing to the structure, a ladder (of course), then a short walkway with fencing on both sides leading to a small ladder that goes down into the area behind the actual signal) to reattach the signal plate that was loose and that's above a line where the speed limit is probably around 100mph and just before a 125mph speed board. Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. 20 second station stop? Reminds me of Canning Town - Jubilee Line trains do a 20 second stop there at least going Northbound if not Southbound too. A woman in crutches was about to / trying to board a Northbound train and the driver shuts the doors on her. The next train came along and I noticed a guy putting his foot against the door to stop it closing on him - when he removed his foot the door flew shut. Very dangerous in my opnion - what happens if a child got caught between the doors just doesn't bear thinking about! I think it's stupid for TfL / LUL to put safety at risk for the sake of punctuality, surely they just need to work out their timetables better (Yes, London Underground does run to a timetable!) and leave enough of a gap for trains to make a safe stop at a station without causing a knock on effect for other trains. I guess I'd really have to see this walkway myself to make a proper comment on it. Nothing wrong with whites of the eyes driving Was wondering why with the new track layout that the 'northbound' line now rises up a makeshift bank just the thames side of surrey canal junction. I know the former alignment was on the flat Paul You have to get a red before you can get any other colour Log in to reply |

I have only been belting up and down the fast lines lately and have been amazed at how many LOROL units have been running. And then last week I had a Victoria to London Brdige via the Palace - all ok up until leaving Crystal Palace and then.... red, yellow, red, red, red, yellow all the way to New Cross Gate. Was 9 late into London Bridge. Chatting to other drivers this is not unusual now. Are there too many LOROL trains trying to be squeezed in ? You can only get so many on a stretch of line before you really start to impact punctuality.

Very true, theres currently 8 trains per hour each way between NXG and sydenham, 4 palaces and 4 W/croydons. Just a case of too many trains and not enough track I think Log in to reply |
