Journalists are suckers for speed; extra capacity is a bit more complicated, and beyond the grasp of their simple minds. It was the same when First Group proposed a maglev between Edinburgh and Glasgow, and all the journos drooled at the idea of getting there before they'd left, so as to speak.

With 0.1g acceleration and braking we're adding a few minutes at each end. Whether it can be done affordably is another question. You'll need an almost straight and level tube, and punching that through the middle of England is not going to be cheap. Log in to reply |

When I hear them complaining about how much land HS2 will take ("wider than a 6-lane motorway" if you believe some of the propagandists) I love showing them a Google Earth shot from Harrietsham in Kent where the M20 (6 lane motorway), A20 (modern trunk road so wide enough for 3 lanes) and HS1 with sound barriers on each side run next to each other. Even with the acoustic barriers, HS1 is the least space-hungry of the three.Peter Bennet in post 91400 said:I can hear the NIMBYs sharpening their pens already... that'll make it even more expensive. The harsh reality is it will not happen in my lifetime. Reality at the moment is that I am sitting on 1S12 10:30 Kings Cross to Edinburgh and would you believe it passing through Hitchin we are already 10 minutes late. Mind the bacon buttie that I just finished was great. As I speak we are slowing down again........he ho we have stopped. Now that's reality or am I just a pessimist. Geoff Log in to reply |

Geoff Looks as if all fast trains were routed via the down slow line at Potters Bar for a while this morning. Possibly a track defect? All back to normal now by the look of it. Chris Log in to reply The following user said thank you: northroad |

It was only 1 late arriving at The Waverley. Now on the way back and fairing even worse. 16:05 from Darlington was running late so asked if I could get on 16:28. No it's not allowed on your ticket. Stood watching that arrive only to get an announcement 1 minute after it departed to say the 16:05 was cancelled. It did arrive and the mass exodus ensued. Now on the next one which is 21 minutes late. He he .....and the original post was talking about 45 minutes Kings Cross to Edinburgh. London. All I want at this moment in time is a gin and tonic and it has arrived as I speak....... Geoff Log in to reply |

Bringing this back on topic (harrumph!), is the Elon Musk Hyperloop immune from the Rayleigh wave?
