The video was also on BBC News; looks like a wrong side failure, as the barriers were up and no lights at the time with the barriers coming down onto the wrecked tractor unit.

Yes indeed. I believe I heard on one news report (don’t remember which one) that, shortly before the crash, the barriers had become stuck closed due to weather and someone was on site working on the equipment.
