Found these three on YouTube, may be of interest to those wanting to operate Central Scotland boxes correctly:

LMS instructional Railway Film "Sentinels of Safety" outlining the Absolute Block Signalling principle. Recorded some time in the 1930's.

Marvellous!! The gentleman signallers in full uniform!

Not like the scruffy riff raff we get these days!!! He says in a joking manner ;-)

I feel a bit sorry for the relief man. He has arrived empty handed - no bag? What's he going to eat during an 8 hour shift??

Great videos, think I can just about recognise Harrow & Wealdstone on the second video and the 'vintage' tube train seen through the window of the signal box at said location. Still shocks me to see the lack of safety, the signaller walking down the four foot to get to work. Gotta love the old signal boxes with levers like that - just about remember pulling a few of those somewhere when I was younger but can't remember where it was now.

Clearly nothing changes... I remember this kind of issue from my earliest days on the railway, over 30yr ago! One colleague responded to the "do you have a disability that would prevent you wearing this uniform" question by writing that he'd have to be disabled to wear what they'd supplied; the admin got very shirty with him. I decided to try gentle sarcasm when I sent mine back, saying that I'd retained the ties because they were found to fit. I don't think anyone even noticed... where there's no sense there's no feeling!

There was no lack of safety in 1933. Remember traffic was steam hauled and all signals were mechanical. From any angle you could see if a signal was on or off. Note the signaller walking the four foot in the direction of oncoming trains. As he is about to cross the lines, he checks the signals position and for an oncoming trains and crosses to the six foot to enter the box.
